President Alan Turner called this evening’s meeting to order and we recited the 4-Way Test, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Felix Luciano. President-Elect Jim Reid served as Greeter and welcomed 1 Visiting Rotarian and over 10 visitors. Joel Doss led us in singing the club’s Welcome Song.  President Alan thanked tonight’s volunteers: Front Desk - Johanna Mullin, Joel Doss, Mark Alberts; Photographer & Room Set up -Bill Brehm; Newsletter - Bill Angus; Scribe - Sandie Dewane.

Tom Murphy gave his “Who am I” presentation and described himself as a “recovering attorney”.  Tom earned a BA in history from UCLA and in 1965 he received a law degree from UC Berkeley.  He had a long career practicing family law and became a Superior Court Judge in 1985 until his retirement from the bench in 2000.  He and his wife were married for 56 years.  Tom also served as a Sgt. In the Marine Corp.  His Rotary sponsor, Jim Sommer, presented his permanent badge.

Mike Fuqua gave an update on “Vines & Vittles” – just 10 days away!  He gave a shout out to all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work.  He happily said we are ready, things are falling into place and it will be a great event.  Mike received kudos for his leadership of V & V and for all the time he devotes to it.   Hee-haw!!!

Diane Remick is coordinating a fun Day at the Races on August 20th.   If you haven’t already done so, contact Diane to register as tickets are going fast. Entrance tickets are $25.

Alan reported that the Vista Hill District Grant has now grown to $22,250 thanks to individuals and various Rotary Clubs!   Stepping in for Finemaster John O’Neill, President Alan asked for Happy Bucks and a lot of money was donated by several members and visitors.

Tanya Eraca, Associate Director for Philanthropy at Rady Children’s Hospital was our speaker.  She spoke about the hospital’s vision to solve today’s mental health crisis among youths by creating hope and resiliency for them.  To date,  $50,000 has been raised for mental health initiatives.  Laura Mello, Director of Gift Planning at Rady and President of RB Rotary Sunrise Club, accompanied Tanya and participated in Q & A after the presentation.

Our next meeting is scheduled for lunch on August 11th.  Vice President Cathy Glover will be filling in for Alan.  The speaker is Steve Breen, Union-Tribune cartoonist.
