ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO
* * *
AUGUST 27, 2020 ZOOM MEETING

President Alex call the meeting to order at 11:03 am followed by the Rotary Pledge. Paul Heeter led the pledge of allegiance followed by an inspirational message by Aubrey Paris, “Everything gets easier when you stop expecting it to be easy.” Cozette Vergari, Los Angeles District Governor, a welcomed guest serenaded with our welcome song by Joel which sounded so much better with our mikes muted.
President Alex thanked meeting volunteers, Mike Fuqua, Zoom setup, Diane Remick, Scribe and Newsletter, Bill Angus.

Announced thanks to Rotary’s efforts in South Africa polio has been erased. Congratulations to all of us for being members of Rotary and supporting the cause.

Rotarian of The Month for August is Phil Warner for all his work benefiting the club the last few months and years and recently. Thank you, Phil!

Red Badger, Aubrey Paris gave a very interesting “Who Am I” sharing her life and accomplishments til now. President Alex “presented” her with her Gold Badge. Welcome, Aubrey!

Mike Fuqua introduced member Maguy Feghali who asked for help for people in Beirut affected by the recent bombing many with no place to live, no work, bank failures, and reduced provisions. 300,000 homeless and 5,000 injured. She reminded us, “Lebanon Needs Us.” Rotary Foundation has set up a relief fund and accepting donations.

Dan Barrios has Paul Harris Pins ready to distribute and will do so Saturday to those already notified.

Good news, for the first time in a long time and very welcomed, Arilla had no “Family of Rotary” announcements. Looks like everyone nice and healthy. Good news!

Patrick Chaffee reports receipt of $472 in Happy Bucks!

Our speaker, Barbara Johnson of the Innocence Project” provided a very enlightening and extremely revealing presentation on human trafficking in San Diego. Our eyes were introduced and opened to a little known fact how prevalent human trafficking is in San Diego and how widespread and affects every segment of society.

We need to protect and educate children before they become caught in the dangerous web of trafficking with a low percentage of escaping on their own. Two nail salon owners in RB arrested for forced labor and debt bondage. 20% of those trafficked are boys. Barbara provided a 4 minute video further supporting her position which included a summary from our district attorney. If you think you see something suspicious, do not hesitate, call 888-373-7888.

Terry Heck, in commemoration of Ms. Johnson’s presentation supplied a very appropriate book title, “Children At War” to be donated to BHMS in her name. Speaker next meeting will continue with informing us about human trafficking.

Ernie Giles joined Mike and Karen Stelman at their home and via Zoom joined Mike in nominating our president, Alex Robertson to run for District Governor for 2023-2024. Congratulations, Alex!

Mike Stelman reported Poinsettia Sale coming along well but need to sell about 140 more cases to sell out and urged everyone, especially those who haven’t responded yet to contact him with their order.

Dave King announced the Marine Proud Golf Tournament September 28 at Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Entry fee, $125. A very good cause!
