Rotary August 23, 2018 Meeting Notes
By Sandie Dewane

Today’s meeting was held at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo although many of our members went to BHCC first.  President Doug Dawson called the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m.  Karen Stelman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Greeter Frances Blair introduced two visiting Rotarians.  Dan Barrios gave today’s Inspirational Message by sharing some of President Ronald Reagan’s humorous quotes.
President Doug thanked today’s volunteers:  Troy Daum, Joel Doss, Jim Reid – Front Desk; Paul Donick, Jim Reid – Set up Crew; James Kaspar – Photographer; John O’Neill - Meeting Coordinator; and Sandie Dewane- Scribe.
President Doug gave a tribute to our beloved Club member Joe Max who recently passed away.  Joe, at age 100, had a wonderful sense of humor and we always looked forward to seeing him and hearing his jokes and short stories.  Doug thanked Vern Cook for his extraordinary kindness to Joe in driving him to our weekly meetings and other club events.  Some of the members shared their favorite memories of Joe.
Our Club received a thank you letter from Bruce May on behalf of the Poway Unified School District for the $2,200 donated by several Rotarians for their summer STEM program.  A thank you letter was also received from last week’s speaker, Michael Gaulden who spoke on behalf of the Monarch School, a school for homeless children.  In his letter, he mentioned that many of our members contacted him asking how they could help.  He is NOT asking for money, but for special classroom assistance from volunteers who can help as mentors for the students regarding work readiness, communications, etc.
Last weekend some of our members traveled to Mexico to meet with Rotary members from Tijuana.  They met our group at the Border and escorted them around the area.  Projects were discussed in which our Clubs can work together.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit – especially Diane Remick, even though she was overlooked one evening when dinner was served!
Jim and Joanne Hlydahl were given a beautiful plant from District 5340 as a thank you for, once again, hosting the farewell party at their home for the Youth Symphony members.  Jim said it is something he and Joanne truly enjoy each year.  Thank you Jim & Joanne!
Before our fabulous Fine Master John O’Neill got into doing what he does so well, he informed us that next week he will be having spinal surgery.  It will be quite an extensive procedure and will require a lengthy recovery period.  John is requesting NO visits as he will need the time to recover.  However, he has recruited Don and Kathy Glover who will be serving as “gatekeepers” for him.  They will keep us informed on John’s progress and all members are requested to go through Don and Kathy before contacting John.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you John!  We can’t wait for your return, so we can cheer and boo at the same time 😊.

John let everyone off easy this week and asked for happy bucks.  Numerous people had lots of reasons to be happy.  Thanks to everyone for their donations!
Past President Don Glover, filling in for Pat Chaffee, introduced today’s speaker.  Paul Gorman, immediate Past President of the RB Rotary Sunrise Club, gave an informational presentation on the importance of understanding that Club members want to participate in areas in which they have an interest and expertise.   He also stressed the importance of marketing and fundraising in helping to recruit new members, creating awareness in the community, and holding a successful fundraising event.  As usual, Jim Hyldahl did a great job in matching the speaker’s topic even though he couldn’t get a book from Bernardo Heights Middle School this week.  He didn’t let that deter him as he donated a book from his own collection.
President Doug reminded us about the TGIX party that he and Jess are hosting at their home on Friday, September 7th.  So far 32 have signed up but they are still waiting to hear from many members.  Please let him know asap if you will be attending.  Thanks Doug and Jess – we are looking forward to it!
Doug closed the meeting with a funny short story in honor of Joe Max.
