Remaining 2019 Volunteer Opportunities at Ronald McDonald House, the dates are:

November 5th


We usually have about 10 members help serve dinner from 6:00 to 7:30.  The majority of our group needs to arrive at 4:00PM to prepare food and also stay after dinner to clean up until 8:00 PM. Co-President Susan called the meeting to order and led the members in reciting the Four Way Test. Felix Luciano honored the military as he led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Inspirational Message, given by John Goodrich, reminded the Club of how blessed we are to live in America. Greeter Jim Hyldahl introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. Joel led the Welcome song. Susan thanked today’s volunteers: Joel Doss, Judy Lutiken and Rick Bramble at the Front Desk, Setup Crew was John Kasser and friends, Scribe Rz Norris, Photographer James Kaspar and Meeting Organizer John O’Neill.

Membership Committee Chair, Alan Turner, spoke of the many ways the current members can help with bringing in prospective members for the Club.

Don Glover announced some upcoming activities that are open to our membership:
 Rotary/Padre baseball game is September 9 th at 7:10 pm, with dinner before hand at the Half Door Brewery. Purchase tickets on the District website before August 26th .
 RBCC Safety Fair is September 21st at the Palomar Community College Campus in Rancho Bernardo. Our Club is a major sponsor and will have a booth there for Club information and promotion of the V&V event next July. The proceeds benefit RB First Responders, and funds items the City of San Diego does not provide. Volunteers are needed.
 The annual RBCF Thanksgiving Luncheon is Friday, November 22nd . Our Club is a Bronze Sponsor. Tickets are $50 each until October 15th , then will increase to $60 each after that date. Don would like to have 2 full table of Club members attend.
 RB Rotary Club Foundation is accepting Grant and Matching Gift applications. Submit the applications to Charlie Crew by October 1st . Hold checks for Matching Gifts until the grant has been approved.
 Grand Parents Day at Poway Lake on September 8th , 1:00 to5:00. Our Club is invited to participate by the Sunrise Club, and will have a pot-luck with old fashioned games.
 Rotary District Golf League will have an Organizational meeting August 26th .
 The Carlsbad Brewfest will take place at Holiday Park in Carlsbad September 7th ,12:00 to 4:30 p.m..

Don introduced Caden and Chase Novell, members of the Boy Scouts of America. Caden is working on his Eagle Scout badge, and for a project wants to build a bench for the 4S Ranch public library. He figures it will cost $500 for supplies for the bench, and asked for Rotary support for this project. It was suggested that the members present “pass the hat” toward helping with the cost. A total of $360 was collected at today’s meeting.

A Rotary Leadership Institute seminar will be at the Del Mar Hilton on September 21 st . Cost for
Red Badges is $20/ Gold Badges $30.

Rz Norris announced a new Club activity for February 29th next year. A block of seats at the Poway Center for the Arts has been set aside for the “Winter Dance Party”, featuring the music of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and Big Boppers. Seating is down stairs, center. Michael Rennie, the PCA contact, has 36 seats for us, and needs payment for half the seats before tickets go on sale to the public. A date of September 19th was given for the deadline for that payment.
Tickets are $45 each (group rate), first come, first served. Gary Saks will send more information on the Club website.

Mike Stelman talked about the Poinsettia drive to benefit Mira Mar NAS. He introduced Celeste Bauer, a coordinator for returning deployed Military, who spoke about the need for “Peace Bags” (containing toiletries and personal items), for members returning to barracks. There will be a Peace Bag stuffing session soon.

Arilla St Laurent said a get well card was being circulated today for Maureen, who is still hospitalized.

Our ever-popular Fine Master, John O’Neill, scored some fun fines as well as collecting lots of Happy Bucks.

Dan Barrios recognized Felix and Athenea Luciano for signing up for automatic with drawl for the Rotary Foundation, and awarded them Harris Foundation pins.

Pat Chaffee introduced today’s guest speaker, Mary Ellen Barrett, Deputy District Attorney, who spoke on Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking. She presented some of the ways in which victims are approached and involved, and some of the ways this practice can be stopped. Terry Heck presented the Speakers Book “Streetcar Justice” for our speaker to sign.
