August 19, 2021
Presidents Athenea Luciano and Alex Robertson brought our meeting to order at 12:30 pm and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Hyldahl.

Dave King presented an inspirational thought regarding our support and withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Then new member Terri Hunter introduced our guests.

Joel Doss led us in singing them our hearty and inspirational welcome song, which they somewhat appreciated.

President Athena thanked today’s volunteers: the front desk staffed by Joel, Pat Chaffee and Shirley Napierala, room setup by Sgt. at Arms Bob Vaughn, photos by James Kaspar, the newsletter by Bill Angus and these words by your humble scribe Dave Brooks.

Dave King announced a golf tournament sponsored by MCAS Miramar. Jan Goldsmith announced a fundraiser to benefit Tender Loving Canines / Guide Dogs of America. It will be a softball game between our club and Sunrise Rotary. The event will be on November 13 at 1 pm at Community Park. TLC/GDA will participate and bring some dogs.

Arilla St. Laurent brought us up to date on the Family of Rotary. Bill Brehm is recovering from his surgery and experiencing pain. Jim Hyldahl visited him recently and said the pain has now lessened. Arilla was wearing a hat because she had head surgery and is doing well.

Our illustrious Finemaster John O’Neill presided over a number of fines including on for Mike Fuqua for a very pink shirt. Jeanne Hawkins had Happy Bucks to thank Jim Reid for covering the secretary job while she travels. Bob Vaughn did an amazing job in cleaning out and organizing the club’s storage box. President-elect Alan Turner celebrated his birthday.

President Alex then introduced our speaker and member Jan Goldsmith.

Jan has had a distinguished career as an attorney, mayor, California Assembly member, Superior Court judge and city attorney for the City of San Diego. He told us about his latest career as a journalist for the San Diego Tribune. Jan writes a 675-word column for a feature called “Someone San Diego Should Know”. Along with several other contributors, Jan profiles San Diegans who have overcome obstacles and/or found significant ways to make San Diego a better place.

Jan’s speaker’s gift was a book donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library about Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

President Alex closed the meeting at 1:30 pm.
