Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo

August 17, 2023, Meeting

Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane

President Jim Reid called the meeting to order and we began by reciting the 4-Way Test, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Christine Testa.  Jim thanked the following volunteers: Greeter-John Mullin; Pledge-Christine Testa; Inspirational Message-Gary Saks; Scribe-Sandie Dewane; Front Desk-Pat Chaffee, Joel Doss; AV-Dave Brooks; Room Set up-Sgt.at- Arms Bill Brehm, Joel Doss.

Greeter John Mullin introduced 2 visiting Rotarians and 9 Guests and Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song.   Thanks to Jim Sommer who brought a birthday cake to celebrate our August birthdays.  Gary Saks gave the Inspirational Message.

Today’s Announcements:  Welcome to District 5340 Governor Nominee, Luis Carranza for joining us today.  Congratulations to Charley Crew for his induction into the RB Hall of Fame.  Judy Lutticken and Jim Hyldahl thanked everyone who pledged donations to help pay for a new filter for Abraxas Gardens. Diane Remick has distributed tickets for Day at the Races on August 25th.

Ron Hunt announced that the Social Committee is hoping to hold “Dinner for 8” in which volunteer hosts would each entertain 8 guests at their homes on the same night. It could be a potluck dinner or whatever the hosts choose to do.  A sign-up sheet was distributed for those interested in being dinner hosts.

Former member Marty Judge was inducted into our Club today.  His sponsor is Jan Goldsmith and Don Glover is his mentor.  Welcome back, Marty!

A surprised Cheryl Roop was honored with her first Paul Harris fellow award.  Karen Stelman was recognized and thanked for her very generous donations to The Rotary Foundation.  She has attained the status as a Level 3 Paul Harris Major Donor. Congratulations to Cheryl & Karen!

We then had a musical interlude with President Jim leading us in singing “All Hail to Rotary” from the Rotary Songbook, 1949.  Family of Rotary – both John O’Neill and Arilla St. Laurent are having serious health challenges.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Because the meeting was running long, President Jim deferred Fines and Happy Bucks to next week. Many of our members’ photos (Scott Lawn, Charley Crew, Jim Hyldahl, Mike Fuqua, Marty Judge, Steve Riddle, Dave Brooks, Athenea & Felix Luciano and Jim Reid) were in the RB News Journal and escaped fines – at least for today.

Today’s program was presented by Kayllee Bosse from the Ronald McDonald House.  She gave a heartwarming and informational presentation about the free services provided to parents and siblings of patients at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Our next luncheon meeting is on August 24th.  The speaker is Michele Nash-Hoff, whose topic is Industry Reimagined.  The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandie Dewane, Scribe
