Rotary Club – April 30, 2020 Meeting Notes

By Sandie Dewane, Scribe

The Zoom meeting was called to order by President David King and we began by reciting the Rotary 4-Way Test.  Rick Bramble gave today’s Pledge of Allegiance and reminded us that “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”  Vern Cook gave an upbeat Inspirational message about the positive things we are experiencing while we are isolating.

President Dave thanked today’s volunteers:  Mike Fuqua – Zoom set up; Sandie Dewane – Scribe and Bill Angus – Weekly Minutes/Photo Coordinator.

Alex Robertson reported that he has recruited 9 members to assist him in creating a 5 Year Plan for the Club and he will keep us informed as to its progress.

On behalf of the Rotary Foundation, Dan Barrios had the pleasure of congratulating Maguy Feghali on reaching the $4,000 Paul Harris level.  President Dave will ensure that she gets her 3-stone pin and certificate.  Dan also reported that he hopes to receive donations from approximately 10 more members so we can maintain our 100% participation level.

Family of Rotary:  Arilla St. Laurent reported that Bob Vaughn’s dear wife, Helen, passed away earlier this week.   Jo Casterline has decided that she is not going to have surgery at this time.  John Kasser is home from the hospital and John O’Neill still does not have a surgery date.

President Dave announced that Mike Fuqua is our “Rotarian of the Month”.  Congratulations, Mike – very well deserved!  Along with setting up our Zoom meetings each week, Mike has been busy appearing in a video interview about Rotary and what our Club is doing to help the community and along with President Dave and Foundation President Don Glover, presented local restaurant gift cards to Palomar Health, RB Fire Station and Abraxas High School.  Mike’s video interview can be seen on the Club’s website.

It was time for the Fine Master and the one and only John O’Neill fined himself $10 when someone reminded him that he has been taking phone calls during our Zoom meetings (as we could hear him) – Oops!   He also fined Mike Ortiz and Resa Coopat $10 each because they are new to the Club and he wanted to welcome them to the Fine Master’s world.

He then asked for Happy bucks and several members donated in honor of our Rotarian of the Month, Mike Fuqua.  Other happy bucks came in for Jim Hyldahl’s amazing culinary talents and generosity in preparing smoked trout, accompanied by bagels and cream cheese, which he is presenting to our club members (3 Rotarians each week).  Your Scribe agrees – a delicious and generous treat!

Benita Page was happy about Casa’s resident-driven food bag donations to Interfaith and the Gently Hugged volunteers, an organization our Club supports, made 5,000 face masks which they donated to Palomar Health!   “Unhappy bucks” were given because of a cancelled Hawaii trip (Dan Barrios) and computer issues (Mike Fuqua).

President Dave then introduced the “ Who Am I” speakers:  Gary Saks and Joe Gandelman, whose presentations were very interesting as they shared life experiences that had an influence in who they are today and the importance of Rotary in their lives.  Incidentally, Gary who has been a Rotarian for 27 years, mentioned that he is responsible for Joe joining our Club.  Thank you both!

The next Zoom meeting date and time is Thursday, May 7th at 11:00 a.m.
