Virtual Minutes - Rotary April 23, 2020
One by one, RB Rotarians signed on to Zoom, awaiting their fellows to join. 49 did-a record to date . President Dave called us to order at 11:00 a.m. to recite the 4Way Pledge followed by the pledge to Old Glory led by Dan Malloy after a special presentation.
Alan Turner, in his inspiration message, made us all feel grateful for the 'daily pleasures' we enjoy without thinking about them; family, food, good health and more. Joel Doss led us in the welcome song and President Dave thanked the meeting volunteers-Set-Up-Mike F.; Scribe, Sonny Googins, Minutes of previous meeting, Bill Angus.
Business of the day included:

Don Glover detailed our club's list of gift certificates and donations to thank many during the Covid-19 crisis such as -Fire Station 33, Abraxas High School, Palomar Health and Medical Centers; grants to Interfaith, Vista Hill, Vacation Village-all totaling $15K.

Vern discussed the Stand-down campaign originally started by our deceased member, Francis Blair. He sought advice as to whether to postpone the gathering of socks, answer pending, postponing being likely.
Dan Barrios for the Foundation recognized Joe Gandelman, all pending certificates will be awarded when we can gather. Arilla reported on family of rotary that Jo Casterline gallbladder surgery is awaiting hospital clearance and slid into collecting many Happy Bucks. The donors were happy to not have 'the virus; grandkid's birth, birthdays and more.
A Happy Conclusion to our meeting was two "Who Am I" presentations, one by Arilla the other Mike Stelman.
Arilla traced her over 30 moves during the military (Navy) career of Chuck and hers, east and west and many sites in California. Known as the "Turkey Lady' in a cookbook, a painter in primarily acrylics on different surfaces including silk having studied in Japan and special projects in RB Rotary. Mike Stelman brought her into Rotary in 1997. She is an Old Globe Guilder, founder of the RB Rotary Dictionary project, and world traveler having visited between 35-40 countries . She remembers meeting a woman in Corfu, Greece who painted a church ceiling, on her back, while pregnant. Take that, Michelangelo! She characterized her life with Chuck and Rotary as "Great Fun" and "Great People."
Mike Stelman, Rotary's 'Renaissance Man' was born in Hartford, CT. Having a difficult childhood, he was fortunate to achieve a full Scholarship to Columbia University in NY. As an inexperienced man he didn't realize the real significance of that award and instead attended college in Oregon-studying Marketing and Real Estate-a career he so successfully fulfilled. He founded two Real Estate companies and has been a Rotarian over 30 years; attended 11 International Conferences and filled many roles in our organization, including club President and District Governor. Between he and Karen they have 11 grandchildren and have been married many years. Figure that one out! Diane Remick reminisced years gone by to knowing Mike with a Gateway connection. Modest Mike-ended his Who Am I, but the rest of us know of his many achievements for Rotary and multiple causes.
Many thanks to Past President, Mike Fuqua, for enabling our Zoom meetings and President Dave King for the wonderful flag background!
The next virtual-Zoom meeting is April 30. 11:00 a.m. The meeting adjourned at 11:56.
Sonny Googins, Scribe.
