Co-President Athenea Luciano called the meeting to order and we joined her in reciting the 4-Way Test. Ken Heinz led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Don Glover gave the Inspirational Message focusing on women in Rotary. Doug Dawson was called on as Greeter and he welcomed 10 guests and 1 Visiting Rotarian, Ole Prahm from the Rancho Santa Fe Club. Joel Doss was in fine form singing the Welcome Song.

Family of Rotary announcements: Tom Kapocius is having cataract surgery; Bob Vaughn broke a tooth and is having dental work today; Arilla St. Laurent is recovering from surgery and hopes to be back soon; Joanne Hyldahl had knee surgery.

Fine Master John O’Neill was recognized with a high volume of boos. We really do love you John - it’s just our way of showing it! The first fine was levied to Bill Brehm – a favorite target of the Fine Master. Bill & Sandy were featured in an article w/photos in the RB News Journal and John decided that was worth $50. Happy bucks were given by Dan Malloy, Jim Hyldahl, Dave Brooks, Doug Dawson, John Goodrich, Pat Chafee and Ole Prahm. Self-imposed fines were given by Mike Stelman, John O’Neill, Shirley Napierala and Reesa Coopat.

Athenea announced that this is the last meeting for Brian Flaherty as he will be relocating to the Reno area to be close to his daughter and family. Brian, we will miss you and send our best wishes with you.

The Poway Symphony was awarded a check from our Club Foundation in the amount of $2,775. On hand to receive the check were Bo Matthys and John LoPiccolo. Jim Reid reminded us that the final concert for this season is on May 29, 2022.

Frank De Francesco, sponsored by Mike Stelman, was inducted into our Club and received a hardy round of applause. Welcome Frank! Thanks for the hug as we were leaving the meeting.

Jim Hyldahl reminded us of the Community Clean Up at the Westwood Club on Saturday morning, April 30th. Reesa announced that a fun fundraiser for Spirit of the Fourth is on Saturday, April 30 from 4:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Seven Oaks Community Center. Entertainment presented by Rob Stubbs Comedy & Hypnosis Show.

Gary Saks introduced today’s speaker, Steve Morris who is the Executive Director of “I Love a Clean San Diego.” Steve gave an informative presentation on how his organization works with the City of San Diego to educate the public on how we can all help reduce the trash that ends up in a landfill. It’s estimated that 75% of what we throw away can be repurposed. He gave several examples of how to do so, and encouraged us to check WasteFreeSD.org for additional information, including how to dispose of hazardous waste. The 20th annual I Love a Clean San Diego “Creek to Bay Cleanup” is set for April 23rd, with 75 cleanup sites and 4,000 volunteers.

Jim Hyldahl presented a book for Steve’s signature, which will then be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library. Jim, relying on ingenuity and quick-thinking, somehow almost related the book “Hockey” to Steve’s presentation!

Our next meeting is on April 28th and the program is Club Assembly.
