Rotary meeting minutes for 4/11/19

President Doug opened the meeting by leading us in reciting the traditional Rotary 4-Way Test. He then recognized volunteers Alan Turner as Greeter, Joel Doss, Benita Page, Bill Brehm and John Mullin for manning the check-in desk, plus Jim Hyldahl leading the Pledge and Shirley Napierala for giving the Inspirational Message. Also thanked were club photographer James Kaspar, John O’Neill as Meeting Volunteer Organizer and Scribe, plus setup by Jim Reid and John Kasser.
Finemaster John O’Neill fined Jim Hyldahl after getting proof that Jim has been picking speaker gift books with his eyes closed, after seeing Terry Heck present a book on baseball to the president of the Padres. Terry was then fined for his cellphone ringing at the end of last weeks’ meeting.
The Rotary Foundation chair, Dan Barrios, announced that the TRF fundraising campaign is going well. We are only 18 club members shy of achieving 100% participation. Dan is asking those few to please step up and support this beneficial fundraising opportunity.
Sandie Dewane encouraged anyone who uses vendors in their businesses to ask them to be sponsors for our Vines & Vittles fundraiser. Terry Heck shared more details on the 4/28 wine caravan. Alex Robertson reminded everyone that the District 5340 will be held on April 29th from 6pm to 9pm at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Please plan to attend.
Bob Maddux from Forever Kids, an organization that gives new suitcases to foster children, thanked the club for our generous matching grant. These kids are often moved to new homes regularly with plastic bags to hold their belongings.
Bob Chambers completed his new member to-do’s by giving us an excellent Who am I? President Doug presented Service Above Self medallions to members Sonny Googins, Russ Haskell and Dave Brooks. Congratulations!
Patrick Chaffee introduced our speaker Mike Sweeney from the Rotary Club of San Felipe in Baja, Mexico. Mike described his club’s extensive support in providing help and equipment to a new first responders program. His emotional presentation ended with some generous donations from our club members.
Our speaker at the April 18th meeting will be Sal Mariscal. His topic is how to successfully deal with cancer therapies, side effects, medical personnel, insurance issues and how to maintain a successful recovery and enjoyable life.
