Rancho Bernardo Rotary meeting September 29, 2016
 
The meeting was called to order by President-elect Mike Fuqua, as President Benita Page is out of town.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ed Knight. President-elect Mike welcomed the members to  ”the Yuma Rotary Tent”, alluding to the very warm and breezy venue today.
 
The Inspirational Message was given by Dan Malloy, who quoted from a saying by Albert Einstein. Our Greeter today was Jim Hyldahl. He welcomed two new visitors, our speaker, Judy Dragt, as well as a contingent of visiting Miramar Rotarians.
 
President-Elect Mike thanked todays Volunteers: Joel Doss and Troy Daum at the front desk, Judy Lutticken, Doug Dawson and Paul Donick for the setup, photographer James Kaspar, and Rz Norris, scribe.
 
Announcements: Foundation Seminar on October 8th at USD, Rotary Leadership Institute on October 22nd, the Rotary Foundation Dinner and Cruise on November 5th.  An update on our Club meeting venue suggests the meetings will be moved to either Stoneridge CC, or CCRB until Bernardo Heights CC is done with remodeling.
 
Gary Sacs introduced the Miramar Rotary Club visitors: President John, Past President Gary, Steve, Bill, Chuck, and Ernie.
 
Joe Gandelman was inducted into our Rotary Club by President-elect Mike. His red badge and folder were presented by sponsor Gary Saks. Joe’s mentor is Don Glover.
 
Family of Rotary: Dave Brooks said Services for Sherry Collins will be held October 2nd., in Palm Desert. Vern Cook mentioned that Jo Casterline is doing better.
 
President-elect Mike spoke about the Interact Leadership Conference held September 24th.  Scott Robertson was also in attendance. Seven students from Del Norte High School attended, and several were elected to District Wide positions.  They would like to see Rancho Bernardo High School get involved in this program.
 
Gary Saks noted our Clubs recognition by the Poway Center Performing Arts at a reception, placing our Club name on the Donor Wall for our donation to that venue.
 
Vern Cook told of current Service Projects: Ronald McDonald House dinner service for October 12, is cancelled. The Interfaith Bar-B-Q is coming up.  No firm date. The Greeting Card Project is getting organized. Arilla’s Dictionary Project is in the works.  She announced that she is turning the program over to Toby Westbrook and Kathy Glover next year.
 
Program Chair, Frances Blair, thanked Vern for arranging our programs for the first quarter of the year.
 
Frances Blair said the Christmas Card Project, to send Christmas Cards to our military overseas, has five members volunteering their homes to host signing groups. Each is setting their own date for the project. Jim Hyldahl, Shirley Napierala, Larry Saunders and Karen Stelman will join Frances in this project.
 
Frances reported on the “Women in Rotary” tea held last Sunday at the Westgate Hotel. She noted that no men attended the tea, and (in her role of “Fine Master) asked all the men in the club to stand. Those men who could not answer 3 questions about Women in Rotary history were fined $1.00 each.
 
Vern Cook introduced our speaker, Judy Dragt, from the San Diego Police Department, Rancho Penasquito substation. She gave good information on crime prevention and answered many questions. Two websites were mentioned to track crime in your area: nextdoor.com and crimemapping.com.  Jim Hyldahl present “Massacre in Munich”, to be given to Bernardo Heights Middle School, for the speakers signature .
 
President-Elect Mike adjourned the meeting.
