Rotary meeting minutes of 9/1/16

President Benita left before the meeting opened because she was not feeling well.  Stepping in for Benita was Charley Crew, who reprised his skills as a fine moderator and leader.

Jon Harris handled the Pledge of Allegiance comparing patriotism with how SF 49er Colin Kaepernick is using the pregame Star Spangled Banner as a protest for Black Lives Matter.  Dick Norfolk gave a fine invocation and substitute   President Charley thanked John O’Neill as scribe, Rob Pringle as greeter, Joel Doss for his excellent work at the check-in desk and the setup crew of Doug Dawson and Paul Donick.

The presidential messages were that, on 9/25, there would be a tea Celebrating Women in Rotary over the past 30 years.  As of today, 10 club members are attending the event.  Also, there is a Foundation Seminar scheduled on 10/8 and on 11/5 there will be a TRF Dinner and Cruise.  Check them out on the District website and sign up if you’re interested.  Charley acknowledged a thank you note from Jim Edwards.  Come see us soon, Jim!  Charley then asked if there is a club member who could step up and take over the function of Website Editor.  Please let President Benita know if are interested.

Mike Fuqua asked anyone who has not yet filled out his membership questionnaire, to please do so today.  He will tabulate the responses and report the results back to us soon.

Ed Knight and Dave Brooks gave us an insider view of how the process works in Ecuador to hear the various in-country presentations on grant requests.  The presentations are made at a Project Fair in Cuenca, Ecuador.  Most of the Rotary clubs in the country participate.  Finemaster John O’Neill extracted $10 each from five new Rotarians who managed to get their pictures in the local paper. A number of members made generous Happy Buck contributions.  Thank you all.

Vern Cook introduced our speaker who is from Project Wildlife.  This organization cares for injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife and releases rehabilitated animals back into their natural habitats.  They recently partnered with the San Diego Humane Society and the SPCA.

The meeting was adjourned with these closing Inspirational thoughts:
“I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights.  That is the way of a whole human being.” – Abraham Lincoln
“Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.” – George Eliot

John O'Neill, Scribe.
