Rotary meeting minutes of 10/20/16
President Benita opened the meeting by reminding us that World Polio Day is October 24th, and that we should all think of the good that Rotary has done in eliminating polio around the world.Rob Pringle led the Pledge of Allegiance. Vern Cook gave a reluctant invocation, but finished with a fine quote from Vince Lombardi, “Gentlemen, we will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence.” President Benita thanked John O’Neill as scribe, Joe Gandelman as greeter, Joel Doss and Sonny Googins for their excellent work at the check-in desk and the setup crew of Doug Dawson Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick.
The presidential messages were that, on 10/22, there will be a Rotary Leadership Institute seminar, on 11/3 there will be a North County Philanthropic Volunteer Awards luncheon, and on 11/5 there will be a Rotary Foundation Dinner and Cruise. Also, on Monday 10/24 at 10am there will be a St. Madeline’ Sophie’s Center Tour. If you are interested in going, please contact Maguy Feghali. World Polio Day is October 24th. Each club has been asked to raise $2650. To date we have collected $210. Other projects include the Greeting Card Project, which is ongoing in a number of club members’ homes. Also, volunteers are needed for an 11/12 BBQ at Interfaith. See Larry Saunders for more details. FYI, we will be conducting an Adopt-A-Family drive in November for delivery in December.
Karen Stelman gave a Family of Rotary update regarding Jo Casterline, who is being treated for a MRSA infection and is responding well. She also reported that Maureen Rouleau’s husband Mike is recovering from a heart attack after receiving two stents, and that Jim Edwards is in good spirits and accepting visitors at the Remington Club Health Center. In addition, Karen announced that the Miramar Semper Fidelis Rotary Club is holding their 6th annual poinsettia fundraiser. The flowers come 14½ to 16½ inch tall multi-bloom Holiday Red or White 6½ inch pots with a gold foil sleeve in eight one-color pots per box for $100. If we sell a minimum of 13 boxes (104 plants) our club receives $24 per box, and $32 per box if we sell 26 boxes (208 plants). Orders must be submitted by November 15th.
Finemaster John O’Neill fined Shirley Naperiala $10 for her cover photo in the latest 92128 magazine. There was welcome news from Scott Robertson who found a manager job with US Bank and paid $20 in Happy Bucks. Charley Crew stepped up with $40 to pay for each day on his recent driving trip. A number of members made generous Happy Buck contributions. Thank you all.Karen introduced our speaker, Debby Syverson, a development liaison for the San Pasqual Academy. Debby described the success of this unique school. It is a first-of-its-kind, 238 acre residential co-education campus that offers San Diego County foster teens a safe, stable and caring home where they can learn the academic, social and life skills that will allow them to become productive and successful adults. The campus features individual family-style homes, an on-site, accredited high school, a cafeteria, a technology and career information center, an auditorium, recreation fields, a gymnasium, a Health and Wellness Center, a Day Rehabilitation Clinic and a swimming pool. The San Pasqual Fire Department is also on the campus and provides internship opportunities for the youth. There are currently 112 kids at the academy and the graduation rate is an impressive 97%.
President Benita adjourned the meeting with these closing Inspirational thoughts:- Foster children are brave children.
- If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.
- If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.
- If you want to touch the future, touch a child’s life.
John O'Neill, Scribe.
