***Stoneridge Country Club is the location for our meetings through the end of 2016   (or until BHCC is reopened).    Stoneridge will have a courtesy golf cart shuttle to pick you up in the parking lot if you prefer that to walking.***

Meeting Minutes
October 13, 2016

Our meeting today was at StoneRidge Country Club, where we met from 1985-2008.  The facility is much brighter inside now.  We will be meeting here until the renovation of Bernardo Heights Country Club is complete, estimated to be in December. The food was very good and the PA system worked well.  However, the projector and screen they have plays the video only, we have to put the microphone by the laptop’s speakers to hear audio.

President Benita brought the meeting to order and told us that Megan Gross had been named one of 5 California Teachers of the Year by the state Department of Education.  Megan teaches autistic students at Del Norte High School.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Diane Berry.  She told us the story of how the 50 State Flag was designed in 1958 by a 17 -year-old high school student.  His teacher raised his grade from a B- to an A when his design was picked.   Past President Don Glover inspired us with some thoughts about friendship.

Our greeters today were Larry Saunders and Lynn Ross.  We had several visitors including Joanne Hyldahl and Alberta Max.  Joel Doss did a great job leading us in our welcome song.

Benita thanked our volunteers:  room setup by Judy Lutticken and Vern Cook; check-in by Joel Doss and past President Arilla St. Laurent; photography by James Kaspar; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks.

Benita gave Rotary coins to Judy, Vern and Dave for their pre-meeting efforts towards making the transition to StoneRidge as smooth as possible.

Benita announced that the Rotary Leadership Institute would be held on October 22nd and the RI Foundation Cruise and Dinner will be held on November 5th.

Larry told us we would be serving a BBQ lunch at Interfaith Community Services on November 12th.  Frances Blair has initiated the Greeting Card Project.  We will meet at 4 locations on October 18th to sign 1125 holiday cards which will be sent to active duty service members throughout the world.

Toby Westbrook gave us his “Who Am I” talk and got his gold badge from Benita and his sponsor Arilla.

A reminder of club foundation president Gary Saks’ announcement that members requesting matching gifts and grants should submit their applications (forms are available on the club’s website) by October 27th.

Jim Edwards is in Remington Skilled Nursing with a bacterial infection.  He would like visitors and is in Room 600.  Steve Riddle had surgery.

Lynn Ross then put on the Finemaster hat and quizzed us on what Toby said during his talk.  Those with incorrect answers paid a price.

Speaker chair Mira Bozanich introduced Danielle Rivard who spoke to us about the Make A Wish Foundation.  The San Diego branch does about 230 wishes per year with a staff of 17 and about 300 volunteers.

President Benita closed the meeting with quote from Louisa May Alcott:  “We all have the power to make wishes come true – as long as we keep believing.”
