RB Rotary Meeting Minutes for October 23, 2014

President Don started the meeting early at 12:15 today to accommodate the schedules of our three speakers.  Bill Bonner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Benita Page inspired us with a quote she found while visiting the Scottish War Memorial.  Next he thanked our volunteers:  setup by Vern Cook, Bill Bonner and Paul Donick; check-in by Frances Blair, Kathleen Smith and Treasurer Rick Bramble; photography by new member James Kaspar and for these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

The Family of Rotary report noted that Tom Noll is recovering well from his prostrate surgery.

Dave told the membership that price for attending the club’s 50th anniversary celebration on December 4th will be $60 per person.  This price reflects a subsidy by the club of about $40 per person.  President Don also pointed out that Bob Vaughn is in this month’s Rotarian magazine.  He is one of 5 Rotarians shown decorating the Ramona Town Hall on Presidents Day.   Bob recently transferred to our club.

President Don announced that we served about 240 meals at Ronald McDonald House on October 22.  He was also proud to note that 20 members of our club will be attending the District Conference this weekend in Palm Springs.  Foundation Chair Benita told us that World Polio Day is October 24, and that donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation in Paul Casterline’s name.  Marty Judge received a special pin from President Don to recognize bringing in a new member.

Fine mistress and president-elect Arilla St. Laurent got Jim Hyldahl for wearing a pink shirt.  She fined herself $100 for having a picture of her and her daughter in Woman’s Day magazine, but didn’t have to pay it because she had a Fine Neutralizer certificate she won at last June’s Demotion Party. Karen Stelman was not so lucky as she was fined $100 for not being present last week when speaker Mike Dunlap had a special bottle of wine to present her. Karen said she needed her checkbook to cover that.  Marty Judge was also fined for being on the front page of the RB News Journal and in several Scott Peters TV ads.  John Goodrich was not fined for wearing shorts at the meeting saying he had to stay cool for the dictionary deliveries.  Dave paid his fine anyway.

Karen then introduced our Assemblyman Brian Maienschein who in turn introduced CalFire Chief Tony Mechan and San Diego Fire Chief Javier Mainar.  They spoke to us about many aspects of preventing and fighting wildfires in our county.   President Don adjourned the meeting at 1:30 p.m..
