RB Rotary meeting minutes - May 21, 2015
The meeting was called to order by President Don a little early because of his full agenda. The pledge was led by Ron Hunt and Bob Barr provided inspiration and directed us to appreciate and commemorate our veterans this upcoming Memorial Day. Past president and greeter Jim Wise introduced a whopping 29 guests including 12 students, who are named below, and 19 family, friends and counselors. Bernardo Heights Country Club put us into the smaller room today, and they had to scramble to add and set extra tables to accommodate us.Don thanked the following for their help at this meeting: Sonny Googins, Shirley Napierala, Kathleen Smith and Jeanne Hawkins at the check-in desk; Paul Donick, Vern Cook and Bob Vaughn for room setup; James Kaspar for his fine photos and scribing by me, Dave Brooks.
Mira said the Family of Rotary was all OK. However 3 days after the meeting we received word that Frances Blair would be having surgery for a brain tumor on May 25. She is out of the ICU as of May 27.
Instead of reading us a Senior Moment, Don reviewed the Object of Rotary for us and our guests. He then reported that 7 members went to Ronald McDonald House on Wednesday to buy and serve dinner for the families staying there while their children were hospitalized. It was a very rewarding experience as always.
Lt. Governor John Goodrich reminded us of several upcoming events. BHCC is dark for the next 2 weeks and we cannot meet here. On May 28 we will be having Vocational Lunches at various locations; Shirley Napierala has contacted you about where to go. On June 4th we will be having a joint meeting with the Miramar club on the Marine Corps Air Station. The D5340 Governor’s dinner will by 6/22 at the Marriott UTC and we get to demote President Don on 6/25 right here at BHCC.
Past president Bill Angus told us that our Fairway to Honor last Monday was a success; we hosted 36 servicemen and a good time was had by all. Marty Judge sold us Rubber Ducky tickets in memory of Bob Wells and benefitting the RB Business Association.Don then had the pleasure of installing Jennifer Garey as a new member. She is a past speaker and new head of the RB Historical Society. Jennifer is sponsored by John Goodrich and her mentor will be Tesha Young.
President-elect Arilla auctioned off this month’s flowers from Cozy Posies to Jim Hyldahl who gave them back to Arilla to acknowledge the office she will be taking on July 1. Sonny Googins paid some Happy Bucks to announce that a Rotary scholarship helped her through college.
Past President and chair of the Scholarship Committee Gary Saks then presented our program by announcing this year’s recipients. 12 scholarships of $1000 each were awarded; this represents a new record total of $12,000 donated. The recipients are:Del Norte High School - Benjamin Friedl, Jean Kim, Justin Shin and Ashi Shrivastava, David Tao
Rancho Bernardo High School – Gloria Chen, Theresa Da Silva, Allen Gao, Alison Kadowaki and Anuj Kavi
Gary noted that the Rotary Code of Conduct specifically says “help those with special needs”. Therefore 2 scholarships were also awarded to the following students:
Del Norte High School – Tyler Clopine
Ranch Bernardo High School - Aleksandra Jovanovic
We then had a question and answer period where members asked questions of the students.
The other members of the scholarship committee are Maguy Feghali, Ron Hunt, and Don and Suzie Lisio.
Don closed the meeting by reminding us that we will not be meeting at BHCC for the next 2 weeks. See above for details on these meetings.
