President Don opened the meeting a little early because of a full schedule. Our new Rotarians, Madelyn Reina led us in the pledge and Scott Robertson gave an Inspirational Thought for the Day.We had a silent moment for the plane crash victims in the French Alps.
Dan Barrios was our greeter and John Hawkins tinkled the ivory for us during lunch. Thanks to all. Pres. Don fined himself $20 for calling our new member, Mike Fuqua, a Marine pilot when he was actually in the Navy. We celebrated both Feb. and March birthdays with a beautiful cake. We used every single piece with our larger crowd. We may have to get two cakes pretty soon!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Sixteen people have signed up to go to Rotary Night at the Padres on April 14th. Let Don know if you'd like to go as he needs to buy the tickets.
Bill Angus asked everyone to participate in our upcoming fundraiser. We still need about 30 more military men to be sponsored at $200 a player. Our goal is 50. We also need raffle prizes, players and volunteers. Sonny Googins has offered to handle another fund raiser for the event. She is selling 2' high American flags to be placed at the entrance to Bernardo Heights CC and down the driveway to the front door. She'll sell 50 flags at $5 each.Jim Hyldahl orchestrated a wonderful "Fireside Chat" at Carver's to have our 10 new members participate in a Q and A session. Our board members gave a short talk on their field of expertise and then Jim had each new member stand and say why they joined Rotary and what they hoped to get out of their experience. Drinks and appetizers were served and everyone had a wonderful time. Great idea, great evening thanks to Jim and Don for putting this on!
Arilla was awarded a bronze pin to go with her Rotary pin for bringing in 2 new members. Carl Hoffman was recognized for his service to our country.
Frances Blair was our Rotarian of the Month for all of her outstanding work collecting 3200 pounds of food for North County Interfaith and their needy families program. Her smiling face also greets us every meeting as she collects our money! Our members donated $7 to our kitty
for Frances and Carl and the money will be given to their favorite charities.
Foundation President, Benita Page, gave John and Jeanne Hawkins their Paul Harris +3 pin. She also announced that our club has averaged $407 per person, given to Rotary's Annual Giving program.
Our Fine Master had his way with several of the members but Jim Hyldahl wore a pink shirt and was quickly singled out. That's like waving a red flag in front of a bull! Sandie Dewane introduced our speaker for the day. Marshall Lubin traveled extensively as a young man and then joined the Navy Seal Team One and trained in Coronado, CA. He is also a past president of the Hi-Noon Rotary Club in Carlsbad and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He gave two fascinating examples of what he did as a Seal. He gave a gripping description about a hostage situation and making a high altitude jump (25,000+ feet) from an airplane where he almost lost his life when his chute didn't open. He had only seconds to finally get his chute deployed to slow his decent. He walked away with a dislocated shoulder but he was alive. Whew! He has written two books. The first reflected his early travels in the 60's and is entitled "From Boys 2 Men" and his second book, just recently published, is called Night Moves with many harrowing stories about his time with the Seals.
Our meeting next week will be at noon on April 2nd. Our speaker will be the newly hired manager of the RB Historical Society, Jennifer Garey. We will also be paid a visit by Tatsuo Yokoji, our 2014-15 Chairman of Rotary International Service, District 2690, Rotary Club of Oki Saigo.See you next week!
