Meeting Minutes
July 30, 2015

In gleeful retribution for his many years as our money-extracting Finemaster, Past-President John O’Neil hit the bell to start the meeting…………and the entire room ignored him.  Flustered but resolute, he continued anyway and we finally paid attention to him.  The Pledge of Allegiance was let by Past-President Jim Hyldahl and we were inspired by James Kaspar’s opening thought.

We had one visiting Rotarian, Kate Carinder from Club #33.  Also visiting was Karen Stelman’s son Scott Wilson, and Sonny Googins’ guest Sidney Richter.  Past-President Jim Sommer led us in a fabulous and spirited rendition of our storied welcome song.

Acting-president John thanked our volunteers:  Frances Blair and Sonny Googins at check-in, room setup by Vern Cook, photography by James Kaspar, Past-President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble Scribe, Past-President Dave Brooks.

Past-President Karen provided the Family of Rotary report.  Lew Tyler is in Bend, OR with his daughter undergoing treatment for leukemia.  Bill Bonner is in the hospital for a liver biopsy.  We were pleased to see Steve LaPointe attending, who announce that he had had one cancerous kidney removed and that no other cancer was found.

On August 1st, there will be a Membership Rally at Joan Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.  There will be a Rotary New Year’s party at Cordiano Winery on August 4th and the club is subsidizing $25 of the $50 cost for members.   The next Rotary night at Petco will be August 10th against the Cincinnati Reds, who are just a tad more under .500 than our floundering Padres.  Assistant Governor Dave Brooks will be with the rest of the District 5340 AGs at home plate before the game.

On July 24th, Nigeria celebrated 1 full year without any new cases of polio.  Rotary has contributed over $200MM to fighting polio there and thousands of volunteer hours.

President John reminded us that requests for matching gifts and grants are due to the club’s foundation by August 13th.

John removed his President hat and put on his Finemaster hat (his favorite, you can tell).  As usual he cast his net wide and pulled in the dollars from single-gender tables and those men wearing pink (or something close to it) shirts.   We had Happy Bucks from Steve LaPointe, celebrating his cancer-free status, and Frances, who said the MRI of her brain was normal (note that your Scribe has resisted the temptation to put “quotation marks” around the word “normal” as it relates to Frances).

Speaker chair Bob Vaughn introduced two Rotarians from the RB Sunrise club:  Rob Weinberg and Paul Gorman.  They provided great info on the Rotary Foundation grant process.

When Acting-President John rang the bell again to adjourn the meeting, this time everyone listened to him.
