RB Rotary Meeting Minutes of Feb. 12, 2015
President Don called the meeting to order to a full house. This was the special annual meeting where the Club conducts the high school Four Way Test speech contest, thus students, parents and teachers were in attendance.Mike Fuqua led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Jeanne Hawkins provide a moving inspirational thought that was very apropos for the program today.
Today’s meeting was also special for it’s the Valentines meeting offering the opportunity for many members to bring their Valentine to the meeting. Sonny Googins moved from table to table with guest introductions. We were especially excited when PP Jim Hyldahl introduced Joanne as a potential new member. Joanne is a Club favorite and already very active so it is about time she actually joins the Club. PP Charley Crew is getting better introducing Barbara, even when he had additional guests he did not forget about his Valentine. PP Jim Sommer came to the rescue by leading the Welcome Song. He recognized the song was dragging on and losing its punch, so he kicked it up a bit to the thrill of all our guest. President Elect Arilla and others decorated the tables nicely with treats of candies and cookies to consume following dinner. It was clear Rich Bramble thoroughly enjoyed the treats since there was nothing left on his table. A few other members appeared to have skipped the meal and dug right into the treats, names will not be mentioned.
The meeting simply cannot happen without the set-up crew and President Don expressed his appreciation for all they do each week. And today we were honored with the ever popular serenading by John Hawkins on the keyboards. President Don also expressed his deep appreciation to PP John Goodrich who is tackling the task of scribe this week and he thanked our official photographer James Kaspar.President Don went quickly into the program today given we have 6 students giving their speech today, and with that he introduced PP Jim Sommer who is the chair of the High School Four Way Test Speech Contest. Jim announce the program, shared a bit of history and laid out the rules for both the students and the audience. With that he introduced the first student.
Between each student President Don conducted Club business while the speech judges did their work.
President Don inducted our newest member, Madelyn Reina who was sponsored by John Goodrich. She is excited to become a member and is interested in getting engaged right away. Frances Blair will be her mentor. President Don implemented a new recognition program, Rotarian of the Month, and this month he selected Shirley Napierala, who is also Program Chair and board member. The Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo is fortunate to have a foundation which is used to funds many of the programs in the community, PP Charley Crew presented $2,000 to Vista Hill on behalf of the foundation to help out with their local counseling programs. Bill Angus reminded the members of the up-coming golf tournament and encourage everyone to assist in making this a success.PP John O’Neill was particularly kind on fining, but even when he is in a good mood PP Jim Hyldahl cannot escape his heavy hand of philanthropy. Jim gets fined for wearing a pink shirt and he gets fined for NOT wearing a pink shirt. Next week Jim is coming without a shirt at all to see if he can slip by the sharp eye of John. As always there were plenty of generous members with Happy Bucks.
Following the announcement of the speech winners and the presentation of checks to the students the meeting was adjourned. Next week the program will be Ross Rizzo to talk about the RB Winery.
