Meeting Minutes – August 14, 2014
President Don called our special evening meeting to order at 6 pm. He asked his wife Cathy to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and before doing so she said we should all listen to the video by Red Skelton which describes the meaning of the words in the Pledge. Don thanked Vern Cook and Bill Bonner for setting up the room, Frances Blair for handling check-in, and John Hawkins for the piano music. Dave Brooks was pressed into scribe duty at the very last moment.Don skipped several usual parts of the meeting (like our welcome song and Happy Bucks) so he could introduce our very special guest, the Honorable Keven Faulconer, Mayor of San Diego. Don used his introduction to brief the mayor on the positive impacts RB Rotary has had over our 50 year history.
Mayor Faulconer told us about the challenges of taking office by special election; in particular he had to submit a budget for approval in only 30 days. He also spoke about how important keeping and creating jobs is for the city, and told us about his meeting with the CEO of Illumina, who was planning on moving the company out of state. He convinced him to stay. Mayor Faulconer also touched on pension reform, minimum wage, street repair and giving the city’s 10,000 employees a monetary incentive for improving operations. He answered questions from the audience on retention of police officers and the 100th anniversary celebration of Balboa Park. He said this would be for local residents and that there would be physical improvements made that will be enjoyed long after the celebration is over.Don was pleased that Mayor Faulconer came to our meeting early and stayed late. He thanked him for coming and the Mayor rushed off to his next appointment.
