Rotary meeting minutes 5/5/16

President Arilla opened the meeting by thanking volunteers Ron Hunt as Greeter and Ed Knight for a thoughtful and interesting Inspirational Thought centering on a historical and geographical view of Ecuador.  Ed also informed us that the country has a very strong Rotary presence and will require our help to recover from the recent major earthquake.  Jim Hyldahl led our Pledge and Doug Dawson led a better than usual rendition of our welcome song.  For the meeting set up, Arilla thanked Judy Lutticken, Dave Brooks and Paul Donick, plus Joel Doss for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving special mention were our club photographer, James Kaspar, club secretary Jeanne Hawkins, John O’Neill as Scribe, sargeant-at-arms Vern Cook and newsletter publisher Bill Angus.

President Arilla gave an update on the Toy & Stuffed Animals Project volunteers to man the booth at the Del Mar Fair on Saturday, June 18th, from 10am to 7pm.  When Mike Fuqua returns from China he will continue to gather the eight volunteers needed and provide more information to the club as to our progress.  She also asked that we consider joining D.G. Janice Kurth at the District Conference in Newport Beach May 13th to 15th.

Finemaster John O’Neill found five members not wearing Rotary pins, a number of RAW volunteers who managed to get their picture in the local paper and gathered many dollars from generous club members.  It was a happy day for the finemaster.

John and Deborah Goodrich have generously offered to host our next TGIX at their home on Saturday, May 28th.  They will provide the BBQ and desserts and are asking guests to provide appetizers, salads/fruit, vegetable dish/casserole, breads, plus wine or beer of your choice.  Please RSVP as soon as possible so John and Deborah can plan for the correct amount of BBQ.

John Kasser introduced our speaker, John Kasser, who gave us a special insight on the positive effect of Title IX in advancing equality in women’s sports.  It was a thorough and informative presentation.

President Arilla adjourned the meeting and announced that our speakers next week will be our RYLA students, who will relate their student leadership experience.
