Rotary meeting minutes for 5/4/2017
 
President Benita Page opened the meeting by thanking volunteers Dan Malloy as Greeter and Don Glover for an informative Inspirational Thought.  Cathy Glover led our Pledge. For the meeting set up, Benita thanked the set-up crew of Paul Donick and Doug Dawson, plus Joel Doss and Kathleen Smith for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving special mention were our club photographer, James Kaspar, John O’Neill as Scribe and sergeant-at-arms Vern Cook.
 
 
Karen Stelman shared a Family of Rotary update concerning Brian Flaherty’s wife Bibi, who experienced a fall that ended up with an immediate hip replacement. During the surgery a previously unknown problem with her aorta was discovered and repaired. We wish both of you the blessing of a quick recovery.
 
 
Mike Fuqua thanked our Rotarians at Work team for a successful painting task at the Miramar Naval Air Station. Vern Cook, Phil Warner and Mike reported that the Del Norte HS garden boxes have been completed and planted with a salsa mixture of peppers and tomatoes. Doug Dawson and co-host Charley Crew announced that the Friendship Dinner on May 26th has been sold out. President Benita informed us that she would be absent next week so she can visit family back east.
 
 
Doug Dawson, asked us to join him at the Poway Center for Performing Arts on June 9th and 10th, to hear the fabulous RB chorale. See Doug for tickets.
 
Visiting Rotarian Michael Rennie, director of Poway Center for the Performing Arts, invited us to join him at the culinary event Taste of the Towne on June 17th from 5pm – 9:30pm. You will enjoy fine local food, wine and brews, live entertainment, silent and live auctions and more – All under the summer skies at the Center.
 
 
Gary Saks, president of the RB Rotary Foundation board, thanked the members for their generous donations to this years’ fundraiser. The total donations collected so far exceed $10k. Dan Malloy and Jim Hyldahl presented a beautiful (and heavy) world atlas to Kim Cruise, the librarian at Bernardo Heights Middle School. Our club gifts a book, which are selected by Kim, weekly to the library.
 
 
President Benita called Frances Blair to the podium to present her with a recognition button for her good works. Over the past four years, Frances has done a fantastic job heading up the annual Food Drive
 
 
Finemaster John O’Neill collected fines from Vern Cook for getting his photo in the local paper, Maureen Rouleau for announcing an exciting trip to New York on September 1st to the 4th. Jim Hyldahl anted up for his recent vacation in Low Country, which is along the South Carolina coast.
 
 
Jim Sommer introduced our speaker, Claire Saxon, from the National Military Family Assn.  Their mission is to ensure that military families receive quality childcare, dependable health care, spouse employment options, great schools, caring communities, a secure retirement and support for widows and widowers. Claire shared many success stories in the many ways the group is helping veteran’s families.
 
 
President Benita adjourned the meeting and announced that our evening program next week will feature two excellent violinists from the San Diego Youth Symphony playing selections by Johann Sebastian Bach. She ended the meeting with the quotes:
 
The day you married a service member is the day you joined the military.
When you joined the military, you joined the largest family in the country.
