Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo
May 25, 2017 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane
President Benita Page called the meeting to order. Lou Anna Dickerson shared some information about Betsy Ross before leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dave Brooks gave the Inspirational Message on behalf of Don Lisio who is currently in Illinois for Suzie’s interment. Suzie was Past President of our Club.

Greeter Frances Blair welcomed Mika and Luann from RB High’s Interact Club, Dave King and Peaches, wife of Joe Max. Also present were Scholarship recipients, parents and school counselors. Jim Sommer led the Welcome Song.
President Benita thanked today’s volunteers: Sandie Dewane, Scribe; Joel Doss and Arilla St. Lauren, Front Desk; Judy Lutticken, Paul Donick and Doug Dawson, Set up Crew; and our esteemed photographer James Kaspar.

Announcements by Benita included the following: Our club is having a booth at RB Alive on June 4th. Anyone interested in volunteering some time should contact Toby Westbrook. The District Council is June 26th and is the Governor’s Dinner. Next week’s Rotary meeting will be held at Capri Blu Restaurant in 4S Ranch.
May birthdays were celebrated with a delicious birthday cake. Jim Sommer led us in singing happy birthday to Dave Brooks, Mira Bozanich, Mike Fuqua, Lou Anna Dickerson, and Maguy Feghali (sorry if I missed anyone). Special red/white/blue flag centerpieces at each table were gifted to that table’s Veteran or someone who has a birthday closest to today’s date.

Past President Gary Saks introduced today’s Scholarship Awards program. He spoke about our Club’s history in sponsoring numerous youth programs such as Model UN, RYLA, 4-Way Speech Contest, Dictionary/Thesaurus distribution and Scholarships. He thanked the Scholarship Committee, Mike Fuqua, Judy Lutticken, Maguy Feghali and Cathy Glover for their hard work as it was a difficult task in choosing the recipients. Cathy Glover and Judy Lutticken received kudos for designing and printing the Scholarship Awards program.

Congratulations to the exceptional students who were recipients of the 2017 Scholarship Awards! Mike Fuqua presented awards for Del Norte High School students: Tyler Barton-UC Santa Barbara; Gleb Shevchuk-Stanford; Isabel Torres-USC. Judy Lutticken presented the awards for Rancho Bernardo High School students: Bryant Huang-Duke University; Sung Hoon (Mark) Kang-Duke University; Allen Tsai-Johns Hopkins. Maguy Feghali presented the Special Needs Scholarships to Del Norte High School student Lyric Rivers-Grossmont College and RB High School student, Stanley Do -Mesa College. Following the awards presentation, time was set aside for Q & A with the recipients, which was most interesting. President Benita announced that Photographer James Kaspar will be happy to take photos of the students and their parents after the meeting.

Since time ran out before Fine Master Extraordinaire John O’Neill had a chance to empty our wallets, be sure to come prepared for John’s fines next week!
Prior to adjourning, Benita reminded us that the June 1st meeting will be held at Capri Blu Restaurant in 4S Ranch. Guest speaker is 52nd District Congressman Scott Peters.
