President Arilla called the meeting to order and RZ led us in the pledge. Dan Barrios gave a wonderful inspirational speech, wrapping up with a very good lesson. His message was how to judge a person by the way they handle the following:A rainy day, Lost luggage, Tangled Christmas tree lights and The Elderly! Think about it!
Jim Hyldahl was our greeter and Gary led us in the welcome song. Arilla thanked everyone who worked to set our meeting room up and the other regulars performing their respective tasks. The only Family of Rotary Report came from Steve LaPointe who told us that Jim Edwards hasn't been coming to the meetings, but he will as soon as he gets his hearing aids replaced.
THE TGIX PARTY SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 2nd HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Please step forward if you'd like to host a get together!Past District Governor Larry Scott joined us to award a Paul Harris Society Pin to John Kasser and Dan Barrios. Benita joined them at the podium as this honor falls under her leadership. This award is given to those who pledge to give $1,000 a year to the Rotary International Foundation!
Gary Saks, our Club Foundation President, announced that we will be having an election of new Trustees in a couple of weeks and the floor is still open for nominations.
Charley Crew was the highest bidder for the cute dish garden basket donated by Cozy Posies Florist at the RB Winery. They generously give us a plant each month as a fund raiser for our club. Please think of them when you need to order flowers. They are great! We were reminded that our joint District Conference is May 13th to the 15th in Newport Beach. You can go to the website at District 5340 to sign up. If there are enough people going from our club, we could participate in hosting a function on Hospitality Night.
In John O'Neills' absence, John Kasser filled in to auction off the flowers and be our fine master. It was a happy time with lots of Happy Bucks. Dave Brooks even fined himself in John O's absence because he wore a Rotary shirt with pink in it. He had fond memories as it belonged to our former club secretary, Bill Dosta. He passed away suddenly and his widow gave Dave that shirt. What a nice gesture. John Kasser also announced that he will be the Speaker Chair for the next quarter and has posted speakers for the month of April on our web sight so you can see what's coming up. If you have any suggestions for speakers, please give him a call.
Charley Crew introduced our speaker, Dave Doerr, General Manager of Bernardo Heights CC. Dave joined us to announce that the club had been acquired by Club Corp. Club Corp offers a network of benefits with access to more than 200 private clubs and more than 700 hotels, resorts and entertainment venues. Their purpose is to Build Relationships and Enrich Lives through their Three Steps of Service....
Warm Welcomes, Magic Moments and Fond Memories. Bernardo Heights has already spent 2.9 million in turf reduction on the golf course and 2.5 million will be spent on clubhouse renovation starting in mid July through Nov. The impact on our club meetings will be minimal as the room we meet in will not be affected except for new fixtures and updating interior decor. The bar area will be moved to the course side of their room and more outside patio dining will be added. For more information and/or a new member packet, please phone the club at 858-487-4022 or email Dave atdavid.doerr@clubcorp.com. Jim H. did his magic by having Dave sign a book entitled Been There, Done That! Dave appears to have had a long list of previous positions in and around golf clubs and has a lot of experience with Club Corp. Arilla even did a little magic of her own by asking Dave if our club could use one of their brand new golf carts in this years 4th of July parade and he said yes!
Next week's speaker will be Jeanette Way, The History Lady, speaking on events that occurred in the month of March. Hope to see you all there!Karen Stelman, Scribe
