Rotary Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane
March 22, 2018 Meeting
President Mike Fuqua called the meeting to order and we recited the Rotary motto.  Dan Barrios led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Mira Bozanich gave today’s inspirational message.  Maureen Rouleau was our friendly Greeter.  We had one visiting Rotarian from the Poway Scripps Club and six guests.  One of our guests was Barb Crew.  Gary Saks jumped up to introduce Barb to ensure her presence wasn’t overlooked again by her husband, Charley.
Jim Sommer enthusiastically volunteered to lead us in The Welcome Song as he didn’t want a repeat of last week’s dismal serenade.
President Mike thanked today’s volunteers:  Front Desk – Joel Doss,  Bill Brehm, Gary Saks; Set Up Crew – Judy Lutticken & Paul Donick; Photographer – James Kaspar; and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.
We followed last week’s St. Patrick’s Day observation with a celebration this week, complete with Irish decorations, corned beef and cabbage and prizes for the lucky winners.  Brian Flaherty was pleased to present the “grand prize” of a bottle of 100-year-old whiskey to Jim Sommer!  Prior to Brian’s presentation, Kathleen Smith and Jim Sommer sang a song that Kathleen’s father used to sing to her and then we all joined them in singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”.
Next up was the celebration of March birthdays.  None of the Rotarians present had a March birthday, but we were happy to sing to one of our guests who is a “March baby”.  After that we were treated to a delicious chocolate cake generously provided by Shirley Napierala.  Yum!
Frances Blair announced that we will be starting our annual Food Drive for Interfaith next week.  She encouraged us to donate non-perishable food items such as dried pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, jams, jellies, spaghetti sauce, rice, etc. and bring the items to our club meetings.  BHCC will store the items for us.  She gave an amazing statistic – Interfaith distributes 20,000 lbs. of food a week!  Our goals is to donate 5,000 lbs.; last year our Club donated 4,000 lbs.
President Mike gave a “last call” for anyone interested in attending the District Training Assembly on March 24th at the Joan Kroc Peace Center.  Rotarians at Work projects are in planning stages and we’ll hear more about it at future meetings.

President Mike and President-Elect Doug Dawson attended a meeting of the  RB Sunrise Rotary Club to check the Four-Way Speech Contest results.
A Foundation grant check presentation in the amount of $1,000 was given to Solutions for Change.  This worthwhile organization helps those in need from Escondido to Carlsbad.  Rotarian Russ Haskell gave the initial donation and our Club Foundation matched his gift.
Dan Barrios had the pleasure of honoring Bob Barr as a six-time Paul Harris Fellow.  Congratulations Bob!
Charley Crew, filling in for Don Glover, assisted President Mike in inducting our newest member, Patrick Chaffee.  Welcome Patrick!

Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report.  Judy Lutticken is recovering from surgery.  However, Judy being the trooper that she is, came to BHCC and set up the room for our meeting and then went home.
The very green (as in Irish) John O’Neill asked those not wearing the green to stand.  Without hesitation, he fined each one of them $5 and wouldn’t take any blarney as some tried to get out of paying up.  This scribe had the “luck of the Irish” as Karen Stelman gifted her with a green necklace prior to the meeting.  Thanks Karen!  John then asked for happy bucks and several people contributed.
Sonny Googins introduced today’s presentation on Camp Wanacura – Hope and Happiness for Diabetic Children.
Next week’s program is by Joy Prowse, “A Call to Action for Rotary Peacebuilders”.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
