Arilla called the meeting to order and introduced Shirley who led us in the pledge.  Jim Sommer followed by giving an Inspirational Thought and Troy Daum was our greeter.  Jim S. then led us in the welcome song and most of us actually stayed on key!  Arilla thanked all the volunteers for their  time.  Gary stood in for James Kaspar as our photographer, who couldn't be with us.  What would we do without them!

John Goodrich reminded everyone to get their reservations in for Arillas' Demotion party on June 30th.

Doug Dawson encouraged our members to try to attend the RB Chorale performance either Fri. or Sat. night (June 10th or 11th) for a fun evening of songs, entertainment and the awarding of scholarships.  He even raffled off 2 tickets for the event.  Sonny Googins was the lucky recipient!

Mike Fuqua has put together a team to work at the Del Mar Fair on the 18th.  We'll be collecting stuffed animals all day and in to the evening hours for the children at Rady's Childrens Hospital.  We certainly are a busy club!

Frances and Benita announced the the "Stand Down" for homeless vets will be held on July 22 and 23rd.  This is a huge event where volunteers provide food and drink, haircuts, dental work and generally make our vets feel like the valuable people they are.  We have been asked to bring new underwear to the club for the next 2 weeks and Frances will deliver them to the event. You can also donate money and she will buy what's needed for them.  Benita is also asking for a work party to go on Fri, July 22nd and work at the event.  Please call her directly if you'd like to work and possibly carpool that morning from 9 to 12.

Then Arilla had the happy job of inducting Toby Westbrook into our club as our newest member.  He and his wife Ann were warmly welcomed and they bid us farewell as we left the meeting.  He recently retired after 51 year of International Finance and Banking.  He's looking forward to getting involved in our club activities.  Welcome Toby  and Ann!

The Family of Rotary report was given by Arilla and she announced that John Kasser fell on his doorstep on Tues. evening and broke his femur.  Then on Thurs. he had a partial hip replacement.  Might as well since he was in the hospital already!  I imagine he had the hip surgery already scheduled so now his hip and leg can recover together.

Suzie Lisio is still very weak and is not able to come to our meetings.  She meets with her doctors again this coming week to find out how they are going to treat her illness and get her back on her feet.  In both cases, cards to their home addresses would be most welcome.

Dave Brooks introduced fellow Rotarian Bill Stumbaugh, a long time Rotarian here in San Diego before moving to Ecuador 3 years ago.  He was caught right in the middle of the recent devastating earthquake in Ecuador and had a slide show of so many moving pictures of destroyed buildings and people left homeless, living in the streets.  Our club sent $1,000 as soon as we got word and others gave individual donations to help.  Bill will be the next president (this July 1st) of his Rotary Club in Ecuador and will have his work cut out for him.  Let's continue to keep him and that country in our thoughts.

Doug Dawson introduced our speaker, Mel Davis, who is a top saxophonist in our area.  Our speaker chair asked him to give us the history of the saxophone and description of the different types of instruments.  Mel brought 3 large saxes on stands and a couple of smaller ones to show the variety of sounds and sizes.  His full time job is Sr. Project Engineer for Genetic and he started the Pomerado Community Bank 25 years ago.  He also was a part of the Emmy award winning Coastal Communications Band.  The Sax is a relatively new instrument compared to most.  It has only been around for about 164 years.  In the 1930's and 40's the sax began playing with military bands and then transitioned to dance bands.  We wanted him to play a song but time ran out and we hope he can return another day to finish his presentation.

Next weeks meeting will be presented by Gary Saks.  He's calling it Family Day as he has invited a very talented Ventriloquist to entertain us.  Members are encouraged to bring friends and family to this fun and unforgettable meeting.  Let Gary know how many guests might be coming with you.

Yours In Rotary,
Karen Stelman, Scribe
