Rotary Meeting Notes
June 2, 2016

President Arilla St. Laurent asked for a moment of silence for Major General Carl Hoffman, USMC Ret.  General Hoffman passed away earlier this week and his memorial service is scheduled for June 3, 2016.

President Arilla called the meeting to order.  Bob Vaughn talked about the meaning of patriotism prior to leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Past President Gary Saks devoted today’s inspirational thought to General Carl Hoffman.  Over the years, Carl repeated his moving presentation about his experiences in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam and the importance of his faithful trumpet.  Gary read a poem that he wrote and read for Carl the last time Carl did his presentation for our Club.

Greeter Frances Blair had the pleasure of introducing two visiting Rotarians and eight guests.  Gary Saks graciously led us in the welcome song.  He was also filling in as photographer in the absence of James Kaspar.  Arilla provided chocolates in celebration of May birthdays – we had 9 May babies present. Jim Sommer happily led us in singing happy birthday.

Madame President thanked today’s volunteers:  Vern Cook, Dave Brooks and Doug Dawson – Set up crew; Joel Doss and Kathleen Smith, front desk; Secretary Jeanne Hawkins; Piano Music – John Hawkins; Photographer – Gary Saks; Club Newsletter – Bill Angus; and Scribe Sandie Dewane.

Mira Bozanich reported that Jim Edwards is still awaiting his hearing aids before he can return to our meetings, but he is planning to attend Carl’s memorial.  She also spoke with Don Lisio and he said treatment for Suzie has not been determined, but her spirits are good.

Mike Fuqua reported that our Rotary District will have a “Care ‘n Share” Toy Drive booth at the County Fair in Del Mar.  He is seeking volunteers from our Club for Saturday, June 18th from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.   He also mentioned that if we have any stuffed animals (gently used or new) that we would like to donate, to please do so.

President Arilla gave a shout out and big thank you to Deborah & John Goodrich for the great TGIX party at their newly remodeled and beautiful home on May 28th.  Dave Brooks thanked John for the great party and for the opportunity to celebrate Dave’s 65th birthday with his family and friends.

President- Elect Benita Page gave an interesting report from the Joint District Conference recently held in Newport Beach.  She was inspired by many of the speakers.  Benita also presented Mike Fuqua his first Paul Harris award.  Congratulations, Mike!

Frances Blair is at it again!  She is collecting new underwear for the homeless vets in San Diego County and has requested donations from Club members in the form of underwear or cash (she will purchase).  Please bring your donations to the next several meetings.    The Stand Down event is scheduled for July 22 & 23.

Past President Don Glover announced that Arilla’s Demotion and Benita’s Induction party is just four weeks away!  It will be held the evening of June 30th.  Please RSVP as soon as possible if you are planning to attend.

Our fine Fine Master, John O’Neill, made his trek to the podium amidst the usual jeers and cheers.  He let us know that this was difficult for him today due to the passing of his friend and fellow Rotarian Carl Hoffman.  However, he did perk up a bit when several of us offered happy bucks for various reasons.  Gary Saks was the only person fined and it was for neglecting to bring his wife the drink she requested.  He tried to get out of paying because today is his birthday, but that didn’t fly.  Larry Saunders was thanked for coming to the rescue of a few Rotarians experiencing computer challenges. Special wedding anniversaries:  Arilla & Chuck S. Laurent – 49 years and Sandie & Mike Dewane – 44 years; both on May 27th.

John Kasser introduced today’s speaker:  Ken Blanchard who has written numerous books, the most well known is “One Minute Manager” that sold 10 million copies!  Ken gave an excellent presentation about the importance of collaboration in marriages, non-profits and companies.  Most important qualities:  Essence, then form.  Jim Hyldahl presented the speaker’s gift.

Next week’s meeting is in the evening starting at 5:30 p.m.  Our speaker is Mel Davis, saxophonist, who will give a history of the saxophone, as well as playing it for us.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane, Scribe
