Rotary meeting minutes 7/21/16

President Benita opened the meeting by thanking volunteers Sonny Googins as Greeter and Jim Hyldahl for a fascinating Inspirational Thought.  Ron Hunt led our Pledge and Jim Sommer led our welcome song and took us through a fine rendition of This Land is Our Land.  For the meeting set up, Benita thanked the set-up crew of Judy Lutticken and Vern Cook, plus Joel Doss and Judy Lutticken for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving special mention were our club photographer, James Kaspar, club secretary Jeanne Hawkins, John O’Neill as Scribe, sergeant-at-arms Vern Cook and newsletter publisher Bill Angus.

The Family of Rotary news concerned Suzie Lisio, who is now in hospice.  Dave Books informed us that Suzie would love to see visitors on a scheduled basis.  Dave offered to coordinate with those who wish to visit her.  Please send an email to Dave at davebrooks@san.rr.com if you would like to be included on the visitor list.

President Benita mentioned Project Stand Down at Veterans Village, to be held on July 22nd.  Assignments and directions have been sent to each volunteer.  Don't   forget to take your "Boarding Pass" with you.  We will be working at this event, helping our homeless vets clean up, get new clothes (including the underwear we donated), see a dentist and/or doctor and generally get pampered as a thank you for all they sacrificed for our country. She also thanked the members who have already contributed to this valuable military support project.

Dave Brooks reminded all to consider attending the next District Council meeting on August 16th.  Vern Cook announced the District service project, Feeding America Food Bank is to held on August 6th.  Larry Saunders informed us that the next Ronald McDonald House volunteer project will be on August 9th.  Larry also mentioned that the Salvation Army Back to School Bash would be held on August 13th from 9:15am – 3:30pm at the Escondido Corps Community Center.

Ron Hunt and Dan Malloy invited all to attend the annual International Youth Symphony programs.  This is a partnership between SDYS and Rotary District 5340 International Youth Exchange that brings musicians from across the globe together with SDYS' most advanced musicians for a two-week intensive music experience.  In July 2016, we will celebrate the 12th annual International Youth Symphony. Over fifteen international musicians join eighteen SDYS students to create a unique orchestra, comprised of exceptionally talented student musicians led by SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons for two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts in the community.

The 2016 International Youth Symphony performances will include an outdoor concert as part of the Twilight in the Park in Spreckels Organ Pavilion, a Classical Concert at the Center Theater at California Center for the Arts in Escondido and an opening performance at La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest in Ellen Scripps Park, La Jolla.

President Benita thanked Doug Dawson and Dave Brooks for the excellent redesign of our membership brochures.  She then congratulated James Kasper and Jim Wise for Paul Harris Fellow contributions.  With regret, President Benita notified us that she accepted the resignation of longtime Rotarian Sandie Dewane.  Sandie said that, since she recently retired, she and husband Mike planned to vacation and travel for a while.  Come back to Rotary soon Sandie, we miss you already!

President Benita announced that the club lunch expenses relating to paying for guests and family members of honorees are rising.  Also, she and Treasurer Troy Daum said they also wish to regularly tip our outstanding food servers Fernando and Francisco, rather than waiting until the holidays to pass the hat.  So, the cost of club meals will be rising to $20.

Finemaster John O’Neill extracted photo fines from a number of members.  Many generous happy bucks were donated.  Many thanks to all of you.

Vern Cook introduced our speaker.  He is David Murphy from the International Rescue Committee.  David actually runs these camps and works with governments to place the refugees using a vetting process that usually takes more than year for each one brought to the U.S.  The average stay of these refugees in the camps is 17 years.  The U.S. refugee quota is 85,000 this year and 100,000 in 2017.

President Benita adjourned the meeting and announced that our speaker next week is John Boaz from the RB Historical Society.

* Corrections from last weeks’ meeting minutes:  1) Arilla St.Laurent will be the Gold Badge coordinator this year, and 2) Don Glover is the Membership Chair, not Mike Fuqua.
