***Stoneridge Country Club is the location for our meetings through the end of 2016 (or until BHCC is reopened). Stoneridge will have a courtesy golf cart shuttle to pick you up in the parking lot if you prefer that to walking.***

President Elect Mike Fugua stood in for President Benita today as she attended her son's memorial services this week. After calling the meeting to order, he called on Jim Sommer to come up and lead us in song. He had "song sheets" on the table for us to sing You Are My Sunshine in hopes of chasing the gloomy wet weather away, even though we all know we need it! We even sounded pretty good today!Dick Norfolk led us in the pledge and Dan Barrios gave us a very clever Inspirational Message by equating Rotary to an airplane announcement, reading off all the things we should be doing to prepare ourselves for the eventual "flight" of Rotary!
Ed Knight was our greeter and introduced our guests. Diane Law was in attendance and even though she has been a long time Rotarian, her job keeps her from attending our meetings. She is still supportive when she can be but now she has a job teaching on Tues. and Thurs. Jim S. led us the our Welcome Song, Karen filled in for Kathleen as scribe, Joel Doss did a great job at the front desk with Karen as an assistant, Vern and Dave did the set up and James followed us with his camera.Don't forget our semi annual dues of $125 are now due for the first 6 months. Checks and credit cards are accepted at the front desk or through the mail.
FAMILY OF ROTARY

Dan Malloy had surgery on his knee over the holidays and will be out for a couple of weeks. Golf has been put on hold until Spring so we can regroup after everyone is healthy again.
Mike sadly reported that Jim Edwards passed away on Wed., Jan 4th after a long illness and his funeral arrangements are pending. As soon as we know anything, we'll let you know. Troy, who Jim brought in to Rotary, said a few kind words and told us that he wasn't even born when Jim joined Rotary with 57 years of perfect attendance!
Ron Hunt proposed a verbal vote on the incoming board for next year and the vote was unanimous . The new board consists of: Mike Fuqua, President; Doug Dawson, President Elect; Karen Stelman, Vice President; Troy Daum, Treasurer; and Jeanne Hawkins, Secretary.
Joe Max entertained us with one of his funniest jokes....ever. It seems a man broke into the Louvre and stole a priceless painting. He escaped to his car and while driving away down the main street of Paris, his car ran out of gas! A huge traffic jam ensued and eventually the police showed up and saw the painting in the back of his car and arrested him. One of the officers asked he how he could be so smart as to steal the painting and then fail to put gas in his car. The crook replied..."I didn't have the MONET to buy DE GAS to make the VAN GO. You thought I wouldn't have DE GUALL to do this but I figured I had nothing TU LUZ ." (Excuse my spelling)!
Vern reported on our latest project with the Boys and Girls Club in 4S Ranch and thanked everyone who attended. They had members, children and grandchildren from our club along with 80 children from the Boys and Girls Club. They cut material into strips and braided them together to make chewy toys for dogs to be given away to shelters. It was a great success and they even topped off the day with a pizza party. He also thanked the group of Rotarians who helped served our Vets a great breakfast before Christmas. Larry S. and Vern are doing a fabulous job coming up with projects for our club.John O'Neill did another "fine" job of filling our coffers with money to help support our club efforts.
Bob Vaughn introduced our speaker, Sara Libby, managing editor of the Voice of San Diego. They are a non profit news outlet with the main mission of being investigative journalists following long term stories with in depth reporting. Some of their bigger stories were reporting on the $1 Billion school bond voted on with no improvements done to any of our schools. Another story they followed concerned the MTS officers who beat another employee unconcious and were never punished. Probably the biggest outrage they exposed was a company who contracted to install artificial turf at school athletic fields. The job carried warranties on their work and product but when the fields started to deteriorate soon after installation, somehow the contractor convinced each school to pay to replace the fields rather that honor the warranties. Go figure!
For more information and how to become a member of this valuable news outlet, please visit voiceofsandiego.org.Next weeks meeting will be our evening meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Our speakers will be some of our members giving their "Who Am I's"!
Should be fun. Try not to miss this and get to know your fellow members on a more personal note! See you then.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Stelman, Scribe
