Rotary meeting notes – 1/28/16

President Arilla St. Laurent called the meeting to order a bit early to accommodate a very full agenda, featuring the 4-Way Test Speech Contest.

Mira Bozanich led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Charley Crew provided the opening Inspirational Thought. Maguy Fegali was today’s Greeter and introduced numerous guests. Joel Doss was called upon to lead our Welcome Song. President Arilla thanked the following volunteers: Set-up Crew - Vern Cook, Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick; Front Desk - Treasurer Troy Daum and the versatile Joel Doss; Photographer – James Kaspar; Club Newsletter- Bill Angus and Scribe - Sandie Dewane.

John Goodrich informed us that Jim Sommer had back surgery and is doing well and hopes to be at next week’s meeting.

Larry Saunders sent an email to all members with the four dates when our Club will be serving dinner at the Ronald MacDonald House. The first one is set for Wednesday, April 6th.

Arilla reminded us that the District Dinner is on February 9th from 6-9 pm. at Stone Brewery at Liberty Station. Carpooling is available for those who are interested.

Charley Crew presented a Foundation check to Scott Lawn to support digging of a well to preserve Webb Lake. Frances Blair had the pleasure of presenting a check to Nine Girls Ask, which is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for ovarian cancer.

Shirley Napierala provided an assortment of delicious cookies in recognition of those with January birthdays. Benita Page was the sole January baby and we serenaded her with Happy Birthday, led by Joel Doss.

At this point, President Arilla turned the meeting over to Mike Fuqua and the 4-Way Test Speech Contest. The four levels for the speech contest are: Club-level, Sub-regional, Regional and District Finals. The finals will take place at the District Council meeting in April. Student speakers from San Diego and Imperial Counties will be the program that evening and the first place winner will be awarded $1,000. Mike thanked Troy Daum, Ron Hunt and Lynn Ross as judges and John Goodrich for timing the speeches. He then introduced the first of 5 speakers, all students from Rancho Bernardo High School. All of the speakers were outstanding - congratulations to all!

While the judges were deliberating, Brian Flaherty gave his “Who Am I” talk. From an early age, Brian had his future planned, but fate and circumstances entered into his plans and he was forced to change his career path several times. He is most proud of his wife, two children and grandchildren and spends as much time as possible with them. As his wife and daughter looked on, Arilla presented him with the coveted Gold Badge.

Next week’s meeting is at noon and District Governor Janice Kurth will be the speaker. A very busy Mike Fuqua gave us the closing inspirational thought and with that, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane
