Jan 18 Weekly Meeting

This week's meeting should be very interesting.  Our own Jo Casterline will be offering an impersonation of Ellen Browning Scripps.  Miss Scripps was born in London in 1832 and came to this country from England in 1844.  Ellen spent most of her life in the family newspaper business and amassed quite a fortune.  She retired and settled in La Jolla in 1896.

In her philanthropies no one knows just how much money Ellen Browning Scripps gave away during the last thirty years of her life, but it was in the millions. Schools, colleges, hospitals, research institutions, children’s playgrounds, zoological gardens, the YWCA and YMCA, churches of many denominations, natural history societies and private individuals were the recipients of this generous woman’s gifts and bequests. In La Jolla, where she made her home the last thirty-five years of her life, her public spirit stands immortalized in the gifts she made for the benefit of the public, among them the Woman’s Club, the Public Library, the Scripps Memorial Hospital and Metabolic Clinic, the Bishop’s School, the Community House and Playgrounds, Children’s Pool, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and financial aid in building the churches in that community; in San Diego, the Natural History Museum, the Zoological Garden and Research Laboratory located in Balboa Park, and the Welfare Building, housing the welfare activities of the city.  In her late eighties, the vision of a group of small residential colleges in Claremont, associated somewhat after the model of Oxford University, won her enthusiastic support; the second member of which group, a college for women, was named Scripps College in her honor. To it, to Pomona, and to Claremont Colleges, her gifts in life and by will amounted to more than two millions.  Miss Scripps died at La Jolla, August 3, 1932.

In addition to this presentation we will have short presentation on North County Veteran's Standdown, which will be held Jan 24-27.

January 11,2018

President Mike called the meeting to order celebrating 54 years of Service Above Self and then we all recited the Rotary Motto.  Rick Bramble led us in the pledge and Charley Crew read us his inspirational message.
Dick Norfolk was the greeter and he had his hands full!  The Miramar Semper Fi Rotary Club joined us today and Jason Katz even brought his mother who gave Happy Bucks for sharing such a nice day with us!  Dick asked Susan King to assist him in signing the welcome song.  Altho we were a bit off key, it still sent the message of a warm welcome to our guests.
Ed Knight, Susan King, Joel Doss and Bob Barr were at the front desk and Paul Donick and Judy were our faithful set up crew.  As always, James Kaspar was front and center with his camera.  Pres. Mike gave a warm welcome to the Semper Fi Rotary Club and Arilla announced that two cards were being sent around for our members.  Francie Barrios had a torn meniscus repaired but needed additional work done as it "sprung a leak".  The second card went out to Scott and Erin Robertson welcoming their new baby boy home.
John did a "Fine" job as always....racking in the big bucks with fines and Happy Bucks.  Don Glover put sign up sheets on the tables for another See's Candy fund raiser....this time for Valentine's Day.  I'm still nursing my Christmas candies along.  Now I must eat them quickley so I can start on Valentine's Day!

Mike announced that 36 members volunteered to put labels in the dictionaries this Sat.!  His also    told us he  received a thank you note from the two Girl Scouts that came to our club to raise money for a cart they were putting together for children needing special attention.  Mike also announced that we are in discussions with the RB Historical Society and plan on jointly doing fund raisers with them after running this by the board.  They dropped a project that was very successful because it had grown too big for the number of people working on it.  Together, we feel we can resurrect it as our new fund raiser for 2018-19.  More to follow.

Our guest, Mike Stelman (past President of our Club and Past District Governor), announced that the International Assembly begins this week and it's a wonderful opportunity to go downtown to the Hyatt where both towers are reserved for Rotary.  This is where the incoming District Governors come to train for their year, 2018-19.  Over 535+ DG's come from all over the world and wear their formal "native dress" from the perspective countries.  It's quite a sight to see and he encouraged everyone to try and go down there for a look around.
Sonny Googins introduced our speaker for the afternoon.  Capt. Don Gragg USN (Ret) spoke on "Sleeping With Nuclear Missles".  Even though he was a medical doctor, they served in the military and he choose to be the ships doctor on  Polaris submarines!  His first assignment was on the Abe Lincoln and then the George Washington subs.   He shared some of his interesting stories with us.  He said there were many weeks of boredom coupled with times of terror.  He experienced 3 different scares with missles that somehow turned on by accident but they were able to correct the problems in time to stop any of them from going off.
Jim Hyldahl did his magic with finding a suitable book along the lines of Dr. Gragg's talk!
On June 18th we'll hear from Jo Casterline (an honorary member) as Mrs. Ellen Browning Scripps.
On June 25th the Director from Interfaith in Escondido will be our speaker.

Respectfully submitted,
