FEBRUARY 9, 2017
President Benita opened this evenings meeting with Valentines greetings. Charley Crew led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Inspirational message was from Phil Warner, who read the words of Confucius. The Welcome Song was led by Joel Doss.President Benita thanked this weeks’ volunteers: Front Desk, Joel Doss and Judy Lutticken, Set Up Crew, Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick, Photographer, James Kaspar, and Scribe, Rz Norris. President Benita also thanked Sonny Googins and Rz Norris for the Valentines decorations.
This is our 4 Way Speech Contest meeting, with students from both Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte High Schools. President Elect Mike Fuqua introduced the six speakers for the evening, calling them among the “brightest and best” of todays’ students. Speakers will be judged on content, organization, delivery and presentation, as well use of the 4 Way Rotary Rules. Speakers were: Ellen Tinker, Soumya Kuruvila, Jae Hyun Lee, Shubham Grupta, Janray (JR) Ortiz, and Ritika Shrivastava.Judges for the contest were Arilla St. Laurent, Lynn Ross, and Sonny Googins. Timer was Don Glover.

In between speeches, while judges were scoring, Mira Bozanich mentioned the TGIX at her home on Friday 2/17/17, 5:30 pm. Vern Cook reminded us that items for the Hygiene Kits are still being accepted, and also the Del Norte High School planter project is going forward. Guests were introduced and welcomed during one break.
During other breaks Rz Norris gave a Valentines miniature rose plants to Ron Hunt for having a wedding anniversary closest to Valentines Day, Feb. 13th, and Helen Vaughn, who won the coin toss for birthday closest to Valentines Day, Feb. 24th. Fine Master John O’Neill also collected some Happy Bucks.
We were reminded of San Diego Bowl Games on Feb. 23rd, and Angels Foster Family Network on March 2nd. President Benita announced the District Conference May 20th, saying that the fee for the conference would be subsidized by the club for enrollments before March 1st.After much deliberation, the winners of the 4 Way Speech Contest were announced:
Runner’s up: Janray (JR) Ortiz, Ritika Shrivastava, Jae Hyun Lee, and Ellen Tinker.
2nd Place went to Shubham Gupta and 1st Place went to Soumya Kuruvila.
President Benita closed the meeting reminding us that next week is “Kindness Week”, and that “no act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted”.
