Rotary meeting minutes 2/18/16

President Arilla opened the meeting by thanking volunteers Maguy Feghali as Greeter, John Goodrich for a motivational Inspirational Thought and John O’Neill as Scribe.  Ann Sullivan led our Pledge and Joel Doss tried valiantly to get us together in one voice for our welcome song.  It appears to be an impossible task.  For the meeting set up, Arilla thanked Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick, plus Joel Doss for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving special mention were our club photographer, James Kaspar, club secretary Jeanne Hawkins and newsletter publisher Bill Angus.

VP Mira Bozanich gave us a Family of Rotary clean bill of health.

Dave Brooks reminded us he would host the next TGIX at his new home on Monday, February 29th.  The festivities will begin at 4:00pm.

Dave then presented the Perfect Attendance awards.  For two years perfect attendance, President Arilla and Shirley Napierala were honored; for three years, Dave Brooks, John Goodrich, Gary Saks and Don Glover; for four years, Bill Angus; For nine years, Gayla Williams.  Jim Edwards was honored for an astounding 56 years of attendance perfection.  Congratulations to all for their generous contributions of time and Rotary service excellence.

President Arilla and sponsor Don Glover had the honor of inducting a long time Rotarian Russ Haskell from the Denver club into ours.  Welcome to our club, Russ!

RB Foundation president, Gary Saks, presented checks to two worthy community organizations.  The first check was given to Tech Trek, an organization which helps 7th grade girls learn many useful skills in a weeklong immersive  science and math summer camp program.  The second check was give to Victoria Cavaliere Programs Director of Tender Loving Canines.  This fine organization trains assistance dogs, which are then provided to veterans with PTSD and people suffering from autism.

Finemaster John O’Neill fined many members and gathered many dollars from generous club members.

Charley Crew introduced our speaker, David Allen, who spoke of A View from the San Diego Jail.  As a teacher to the inmates, David shared many insights and anecdotes about life for those under incarceration.

Jim Hyldahl spun another fanciful tale relating to the speaker topic and had him sign our usual donated book to the Bernardo Heights Middle School.

Cathy Glover gave us a wonderful Closing Inspirational Thought.

President Arilla adjourned the meeting and announced that our speaker next week will be Cara-Wilson-Granat, who will share how she met Anne Frank’s father and corresponded with him for years.
