Meeting Minutes
February 15, 2018

President Mike brought the meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by David King, who explained to us why the flag on the right shoulder of Army uniforms is “backwards”. It is to show the flag flying as they go forward to battle, never retreating. Jon Harris inspired us with the story of a Rotarian who lost his legs and now takes veterans climbing the tallest mountains in the world.

Our greeter was Rick Bramble and he introduced several guests. Our welcome song was dynamically lead by past President Jim Sommer.

Mike thanked our volunteers: room setup by Sgt. at Arms Judy Lutticken and past President Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss and Lynn Ross; photography by James Kaspar; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks.

Mike oversaw several announcements. Past President Shirley Napierala told us she needs order forms for club shirts, they are $25. Past President Jim Sommer asked for suggestions on speaker topics for Q4 when he is speaker chair. Community Service chair Vern Cook will be holding a meeting on service projects after the club meeting. Mike encouraged officers-elect to attend the District Training Assembly on March 24th. The RB Historical Society has thanked us for distributing flyers to 3rd grade teachers for classroom visits by docents. The docents will teach the students about the Kumeyaay Indians who lived in the San Diego area as long as 12,000 years ago. Immediate past President Benita Page requested a meeting of all past presidents to plan Mike’s Demotion Party, which will be the evening of Thursday, June 14th at BHCC.
Mike told us that our donation for Hurricane Irma relief was used to help rebuild a house in Port Lavaca, TX. It is owned by a retired school teacher who is raising her grandchildren there.

TRF Foundation chair Dan Barrios acknowledged our newest Paul Harris Fellow+6: Gary Saks.

Club Foundation chair John Kasser presented a $2000 check to the Wounded Warriors at Freedom Station. The money will be used to pay for transitional housing for veterans.

Sonny Googins introduced our speaker Josh Wilson who spoke about his roll with the union that represents agents for US Customs and Border Patrol. Past president Jim Hyldahl presented Josh with our speaker’s gift; a book about building the Hoover Dam.

President Mike closed the meeting with a quote from Will Rogers: “The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.”
