President Benita opened the meeting announcing that this is our clubs 52nd anniversary and The Rotary Foundation's Centennial Year.
She thanked all the volunteers that worked today to keep our meeting running smoothly.  She also announced that there was a New Member Orientation held at Casa de las Campanas  and some of our members even loaned Rotary shirts to them so they could wear them this week in honor of our District Governor's visit.  Gary Saks stepped up, led the Welcome Song and prepared a special song for our visiting District Governor to the tune and theme of "Hail to the Chief"!  It was great.

Larry Saunders headed up two separate volunteer opportunities that were very successful.  One was our quarterly Ronald McDonald House visit where several Rotarians set up and served dinner to the families of children who are being treated at the hospital.  John Hawkins band entertained the dinner guests.
The second function was on Sat. when several of us went to The Salvation Army facility in Escondido and handed out back packs and school supplies to children who weren't able to afford them.  It was a fun day with a bar- b- que, jumpy houses and over 200 happy faces as they received their supplies.

Benita reminded us of some dates you may want to put on your calendar:
Sept. 25             A tea Celebrating Women in Rotary for 30 years.
Sylvia Whitlock is the speaker who was the first woman in Rotary!
Aug 18               On the day of our meeting, it was the anniversary of the 19th amendment ratified in
1920, guaranteeing women the right to vote.
Oct. 8                 Foundation Seminar
Nov. 5                TRF Celebration - Dinner and Cruise on the Hornblower

We were very lucky to have the immediate Past President Alice Atemo of the Rotary Club of  Kakamega, Kenya visit our club.  Kathleen Tucker accompanied her to our meeting and is the Founder and Director of a school for orphans and destitute children in Kakamega.   They currently provide hope to 938 children in three locations.  Their schools depend entirely on the generosity of others.  They are hoping to apply for a Global Grant for school supplies, but they provide so much more, including meals, medical attention and scholarships.  You can also sponsor a child for just $30 a month and change a child's life forever.  You can find much more information about this worthy cause at their websites.
Kathleen@Tucklets.org or at www.tucklets.org.  Kathleen is also a local Rotarian and can be reached directly at 858-442-6601.

Past District Governor Larry Scott awarded Paul Harris Society certificates to John Kasser and Benita Page for joining this prestigious group of Rotarians who pledge $1,000 a year to The Rotary Foundation to further so many programs locally and internationally.  Congratulations to you both!
Benita was also called up a second time to receive a beautiful engraved crystal and pin for becoming a major donor.  They are setting the bar high for all of us!!

Benita introduced  our guest speaker, Marilyn Sanderson, our new District Governor for District 5340.  Marilyn gave some very good insight into what it's like to be a new Rotarian.  I'm sure she touched most of us with her honesty about why she joined and how she evolved into one of the top leadership positions in Rotary.  Originally she joined thinking Rotary was a good place to network.  Although it's not frowned on as much now as it was many years ago,  I think most of us in business felt the opportunity was there.  We soon found out networking was not allowed but we found through our friendships that we could work with each in business as well as doing good things through Rotary..  It was years later when she was "struck" with the Rotary spirit.  It happened on a trip to Kenya, Africa where she visited impoverished hospitals and schools and walked through the slums where families had no shelter and little or nothing to eat.  One of the schools she toured  was so badly run down that she saw nothing but hopelessness.  Then she saw some equipment in that school with Rotary's name on it.  This was her "starting point"!    Those that experience that often call it their "Ah Ha Moment".  Her message was to keep attending meetings, volunteer, travel and get involved.

Yours in Rotary,
