Rancho Bernardo Rotary meeting, Aug. 11, 5:30 PM
 
President Benita brought the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by John O’Neill after giving us a brief history of the term “Old Glory”. There was no inspirational message tonight. Our greeter tonight was Dick Norfolk, who greeted a number of visitors. Gary Saks lead us in the Welcome Song.  Gary gave a brief history of “God Bless America”,  it’s connection to singer Kate Smith, and then led us in singing the patriotic song to a recording by Kate Smith.
 
President Benita thanked tonight’s  volunteers: Scribe, RZ Norris, Front Desk, Joel Doss and Sonny Googins, Set up Crew, Judy Lutticken, and Photographer, James Kaspar. 
 
Karen Stelman told us that Pat Kenney is no longer able to attend our meetings as she has a hard time walking. Jeanne Hawkins said she had visited Pat and they had a good time.
 
Jeanne talked about the district wide San Diego Food Bank volunteer project on Saturday, August 6th. District Governor, Marilyn Sanderson said about 60 volunteers from the district took part. Three members from our club, President Benita, Rz Norris and Jeanne Hawkins, with her granddaughter, took part. 
 
Larry Saunders  talked about the upcoming Salvation Army Back to School program that takes place on Saturday, August 13th, and thanked all the members who had donated school supplies or money.
 
Don Glover and President Benita will host a new member orientation will be held on Monday, August 15th, at Casa de las Campanas.  Twelve new members are expected to attend. President Benita mentioned an upcoming volunteer opportunity for World Polio Immunization Day in Nigeria.
 
Dave Brooks talked about the District Council dinner on August 16th, Ten members from the club have signed up to attend: Diane Berry, Arilla St. Laurent, Doug Dawson, Robert Vaughn, Benita Page Dave Brooks, Vern Cook, Charley Crew and Dick Norfolk Gayla Williams.
 
President Benita introduced new member Jon Harris, along with his Sponsor, Don Glover and his Mentor, Bob Vaughn.  Jon received his red badge, and was warmly welcomed by members.
 
Foundation Chair, James Kaspar, cited approved funding for our youth projects:
  • Four Way Test Speech Contest
  • RYLA
  • Model UN
  • LEAD
  • Interact Club at Del Norte High School
 
Jim Hyldahl talked about the Atlanta Convention next June.  Fifteen club members have signed up to attend so far: Dave Brooks, John Goodrich, Benita Page, Don and Cathy Glover, Mike and Patty Fuqua, John and Jeanne Hawkins, James and Lee Kaspar, Gary and Dee Saks and Jim and Joanne Hydahl.
 
The Fine Master, John O’Neill, was not called upon.
 
Program Chair, Vern Cook introduced tonight’s speaker, Richard Crawford, of the San Diego Library Special Collections room at the downtown Library. He is an Historian and Archivist, author, and keeper of the Rare Books Special Collection. He was presented with the book “Cold War” by Jim Hyldahl to sign for Bernardo Heights Middle school, with the connecting thought that history is due to repeat itself.
 
President Benita closed the meeting with the thought; ”Google can bring you back 100,000 answers; the Librarian can bring you back the right one”.
