Rotary meeting minutes 2/18/16

President Arilla opened the meeting by thanking volunteers Gayla Williams as Greeter, Jim Wise for a very powerful and interesting Inspirational Thought and John O’Neill as Scribe.  Joe Max led our Pledge and Gary Saks helped us to achieve a pretty good rendition of our welcome song.  For the meeting set up, Arilla thanked Judy Lutticken, Dave Brooks and Paul Donick, plus Joel Doss for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving special mention were our club photographer, James Kaspar, club secretary Jeanne Hawkins and newsletter publisher Bill Angus.

President Arilla asked the members to sign up for our April 25th Rotarians At Work Day.  Our project will be at the 4S Ranch Boys & Girls Club, where we will be turning a storage closet into a teen room.  This will entail clearing out the room, painting and cleaning up the area.  If you are interested in helping out you may sign up for the project at the Ed Brown Center.  More information will be coming from Mira Bozanich.  John Kasser then auctioned off a RAW t-shirt donated by Dave Brooks.

Mike Fuqua gave us an update on the 4Way Test Speech Contest.  Mike also sought volunteers for Man the Booth at the Del Mar Fair for one day.

RB Club Foundation president, Gary Saks, presented a $900 check to CEO Chuck Day from Ronald McDonald House.  Sonny Googins introduced two students from RBHS, Valerie Lee and Antoine Gramond, who spoke to us about the upcoming Model UN.  The topics being debated the session will center on the plight of Muslim refugees and the impact of China’s creation of artificial islands in disputed territory.

Finemaster John O’Neill fined enough members to make him feel better and gathered many dollars from generous club members.

We received a special announcement from our District Governor, Janice Kurth.  She is encouraging all members to attend the Joint District Conference in Newport Beach on May 13th to the 15th.  You can sign up at the District 5340 website.  If we go as a club we can participate in Hospitality Night.

John Kasser introduced our speaker, Dr. Cedric Dempsey, past president of the NCAA.  He gave us a fascinating view of their inner workings.

President Arilla adjourned the meeting and announced that our speaker next week will be Marianne Waldrop, Ret. Colonel, USMC.  Her topic is “Women Generals of the USMC”.
