Meeting Minutes
April 14, 2016
Vice President Mira Bozanich brought the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Diane Berry, who told us that Francis Hopkinson designed the Stars and Stripes. He asked for a quarter cask of wine in payment, but never received it! Past President Charley Crew inspired us with a quote from Teddy Roosevelt. Our greeter today was Past President Bob Vaughn and he introduced several guests including his wife Helen, Barb Crew, Past President and District Governor Mike Stelman, Alberta Max, Dede Flaherty, Jeanene Cook, Sue Haskell, Carol Kasser, Karen Shultz and Didi Saks. Joel Doss led us in singing the welcome song.
Mira thanked our volunteers: Joel Doss at check-in, room setup by Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick, photography by James Kaspar, Past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter, music by John Hawkins and these words by your humble scribe, Past President Dave Brooks.Past President Karen Stelman provided the Family of Rotary report. She said Jim Edwards is not attending because his hearing aids are not working and he’s needed to go the ER to check on his heart. Suzie Lisio is getting better and should be coming home next week. Frances Blair was also in the ER for a small seizure and is doing fine now.
President-elect Benita Page told us about a project she wants to support. It is called Workforce Academy for Youth and helps children who “age out” of the foster care system when they turn 18. It provides a 6 month paid internship and a life coach.Foundation President Gary Saks said that the fundraiser for the club foundation would be different this year. We will not do a golf tournament, instead we are asking for donations by check or credit card through the May 12th meeting. We will give out a raffle ticket for each $50 donated there will be a drawing that day for several donated prizes, including a $500 gift card and a weekend vacation package.
The next TGIX will be in May. More info to follow.
Mira reminded us that Rotarians at Work Day will be April 30th. She described our project at the Boys & Girls Club in 4S Ranch. They have a large storage room that they want to convert to usable space for the kids. We will clean out this room for them; we will need about 20 people to do it.RBHS student Omid Rooholfada has made it to the finals of the 4 Way Test Speech Contest. He will compete one last time on Wednesday, April 20th at the Liberty Station Conference Center. President Arilla has authorized a $10 subsidy for each attendee, bringing the cost to $25/person. We currently have nine attending, you must sign up by Monday, April 18th to go.
Sonny Googins told us about her experience attending Model UN this past weekend with two RBHS students. Our North Korea contingent BOMBED South Korea! Lots of notes were passed. The students learned a lot about negotiation and big world problems.Finemaster and Past President John O’Neill extracted a bunch of Happy Bucks. Joel Doss was happy for the help he got from Larry Saunders in upgrading his laptop to Windows 10. Both Past President Jim Hyldahl and James Kasper gave donations to recognize the outstanding job Don Glover has done for the club. Don wasn’t there to hear it, he’s in Boston. Were your ears burning???!!!
Speaker chair John Kasser introduced our speaker Marianne Waldrop. She talked about the history of women generals in the US Marine Corps.Congratulations to Lynn Ross, 2016 Hats Off To Volunteer's Award Winner!
