April 13, 2017

President Benita called the meeting to order with a brief history lesson.  In 1861 the American Civil War began with an attack on Fort Sumter.  In 1865 President Abe Lincoln was mortally wounded at Ford's Theater.  Diane Berry led the pledge and Mira gave an inspirational message quoting Mother Theresa.  Traci Smart was our greeter and introduced our guests.  Joel, Gary and Jim S. all led is in our welcome song!  It was fun and funny.  Did very well without a rehearsal!  Benita then thanked all the volunteers for the day and announced that Dan Barrios had successful hip surgery last week and is at home recovering.  He hopes to be back with us in a couple of weeks.  A card was passed during lunch and is on the way to him.  It was also so nice to see Brian Flaherty at our meeting this week after several weeks of treatments for cancer on his face.  You'd never know anything was done as he looks as good as new!
*  There will be a Rotary Night at the Ball Park on April 17.  See the District Web Site for details.
*  There is a Rotary Celebration at the Admiral Kidd Club on May 19th to honor special guest Ed Futa, representing the RI President and talking about the generosity of Rotarian donations to The Rotary Foundation.
*  District Conference is May 20
*  Interfaith Food Drive is in progress headed up by Frances
*  Larry Saunders announced that Rotarians At Work Day will be on April 29th at the Marine Corps Air Station starting at 9 a.m.  We will be painting the interior of a school on base.  Tools, supplies and lunch will be provided.  Larry will announce more details as they become available.  Car pooling is encouraged.  He is also looking for a less physical project for those who aren't able to participate in the school project.
*  Invitations to the Vista Hill Foundation luncheon and Fashion Show were put on everyone's table.  It's their annual fund raiser to help children and young adults cope with the many challenges of today's world.... both physical and mental.
It's a fun and rewarding day with booths selling all sorts of items.  Call Barb Crew for details.  The date is May 5th.
*  Don Glover happily announced our membership has reached 69!  He and Cathy brought their new neighbor, Susan King,  as a guest and she ended up with the highest bid of $180 on James Kaspar's generous raffle prize.  He donated 4 rounds of golf at The RB Inn worth over $300.  Best guest we've ever had!!
Arilla heads up a very successful "Friendship Event" where several members offer to host a lunch or dinner at their home to raise money for our End Polio Now campaign.  The guests are asked to bring a check (in any amount) to the function and enjoy a wonderful day of fellowship.  It's a great cause and great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians better.
Doug Dawson and Charley  Crew will host 12 people at Doug's home on Friday, May 26th.
Jim Hyldahl is hosting a luncheon at his home on Sat., June 24 for 10 members.
PLEASE CALL THEM AND GET YOUR NAME ON THE LIST!
This meeting was also the kick off for our club Foundation Fund Raising Campaign.  Gary, President of the Foundation, has asked us to give generously as this is in lieu of a large fund raiser that we try to do each year.  Last year we didn't have our Golf Tournament and we were asked to donate to our Foundation allowing 100% of our funds to go directly to our local organizations and programs.  It was a tremendous success and we were able to distribute a record amount of money.  There will be no raffle this year but we will continue to match your donation with TRF Recognition Points that will double your progress toward achieving a Paul Harris Fellow Award ($1000).  A donation of $100 would be matched with 100 points and a $500 donation will be matched with 500 points giving you an automatic  Paul Harris Fellowship Award!  There will be a table set up right next to the check in table at the next 2 meetings.  A check or credit card can be used at that time or you can mail a check to Gary Saks at RBRCF, P.O. Box 28501, San Diego, CA  92198.  Thank you in advance for your generous annual donation to give back to our community.
John and Jeanne Hawkins and Bob and Helen Vaughn attended a Rotary RV camp out last week with many other Rotarians from other clubs in and outside of our District.  They put in a word about our annual underwear drive for the homeless and brought back a huge box of items.  We're still collecting so please bring in new, packaged items for young and old alike.  Benita gave each one of them Service Above Self coins.
James Kaspar give a quick lesson on Latin Expressions using the word Semper followed by other words (which I didn't get) that had different meanings.  It was quite entertaining!

Sonny and Bob Barr gave of there time to coach and escort 4 high school students who attended Model UN.  Two represented the US and two represented Switzerland.
Each of the students gave a short speech about their experience.  What a worthwhile program.  Many thanks to Sonny and Bob for giving their time and guidance to these students.
Jim Sommer introduced our speaker, Derek Abbey, who spoke about the Bent Prop Project.  Derek spent 23 years in the USMC.  He has spent the last 10 years working with the Bent Prop Project searching for missing pilots and aircraft from previous wars.  They have had great success in finding many of these sites.  In 1944, there was a small island located in the South Pacific chain by the name of Palalu where it was reported that it had the third highest loss of life in the Second World War.  That's where they concentrated their efforts.  They were aided by Tribal Chiefs and were helped by US political policies to pursue this cause.  It brought healing and closure to all the families effected by these tragedies.  Interestingly , there was always a flag ceremony at the site of death attended by the family and then the flag was given to them to be used back home if they chose to have a ceremony there.  This unique and worthwhile project collaborates with Scripps Institute of Oceanography  and San Diego State University.  It's nice to know that the military lost... were not forgotten.
Two upcoming programs are: The Trans Border Institute, Dr. Edward Meade
Our San Diego District Attorney, Mara Elliott

Benita closed the meeting with Four Things You Can't Get Back:
             The stone after it's thrown
             The word after it's said
             The occasion after it's missed
             The time after it's gone

Another great meeting.  Bring a friend to share these wonderful moments and ask them to join!
