Meeting Minutes
April 12, 2018
President Mike brought the meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by past president and recent RB Hall of Fame Inductee Karen Stelman, who played a video by Charlie Daniels talking about the Pledge of Allegiance.  Toby Westbrook reminded us about the Supreme Court decision on May 4, 1987 that brought women into Rotary.  In a related story, Delmonico’s restaurant in New York City allowed women customers for the first time in 1868, and will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of that event later this month.

Our greeter was Charlie Crew and he introduced several guests.  He also did a great job in leading us in singing the welcome song.
Mike thanked our volunteers:  room setup by Sgt. at Arms Judy Lutticken; check-in by Joel Doss, Gayla Williams and Phil Warner; photography by Dave Brooks; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks.

Mike had several announcements. Our food drive coordinated by Frances Blair continues for 2 more weeks; we are shooting for 4000 pounds to take to Interfaith Community Services.  Also we need volunteers to serve lunch there on Friday, April 27th, see Larry Saunders.  Our long-time BHCC server Fernando is retiring and we circulated a card for him.  If you want to attend the Padres game on the afternoon of Sunday April 29th, you must tell Don Glover by tomorrow.

Mike invited members to tour the POOCH program at Camp Pendleton.  This is for Marines who are serving time in the brig.  It will start on Tuesday, April 17th at 8:30am.  Several events are planned for Rotarians at Work on Saturday, April 28th, more to follow.  Past president Don Glover is having a great week.  He was on KUSI talking about his Hats Off recognition which will occur on Saturday morning, April 14th.  He also raised the flag at the Padres game that took place at the same time as this meeting.  The Padres were in their usual form and lost to the Giants 0-7.

The club’s foundation will hold elections next week.  The District Conference this year will be at Knott’s Berry Farm on May 4th and 5th.
Sonny Googins introduced two students we sponsored at Rotary Model UN and they spoke to us about their experience.  We also had presentation from Eagle Scout Parvinder Battoo who asked for funding to produce a device that tells when water has been heated enough to kill harmful parasites.
Past president Arilla St. Laurent told us the Family of Rotary is well and our esteemed Finemaster John O’Neill extracted fines and Happy Bucks from several members.
Past president Jim Sommer introduced our speaker David Vidal, a ranger with the San Diego River Conservancy.  Past president Jim Hyldahl presented David with our speaker’s gift; a book about deadly spiders.
President Mike closed the meeting with a quote from Voltaire: “It is better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one.”
